Professor of Mathematics, Purdue University
Leverhume Visiting Professor.
This short mini course aims to introduce participants to the interplay between algebraic and differential topology and the Cuntz semigroup of C*-algebras. It will describe the use of the Cuntz semigroup to build C*-algebras outside the scope of the Elliott classification programme. There will be opportunities for participants to offer contributed talks.
Introduction to Cuntz semigroups
Encoding topological obstructions in the Cuntz semigroup as a route to constructing C*-algebras with surprising behaviour
Computing the Cuntz semigroup within the class of C*-algebras covered by the Toms-Winter conjecture
Homotopy classes of positive elements, and contractability of Cuntz classes.
To register please fill out the form here (by 25 August). We expect to have funding to provide some accommodation in St John's College for the nights of 11, 12 September for a small number of participants. Priority will be given to early career researchers. To apply for accommodation please register by Mon 18 August. Accommodation decisions will be made and communicated by 21 August. If you are a PhD student, requesting accommodation support, please arrange for your supervisor to send a very short email of recommendation to Stuart White and Helen Stringer by Mon 18th August. There is a small amount of travel funding available to UK early career researchers; please apply by the same deadline if you need travel support. If you will need a visa to attend this workshop, please contact Stuart White and Helen Stringer as soon as possible.
From outside the UK Oxford is easily reached from Heathrow airport, via the Oxford airliner bus. Note that the UK now has an electronic authorisation to travel system. Other than UK or Irish nationals, or those with the permission to live, work or study in the UK, either an ETA or visa is needed to enter the UK (which applies depends on your nationality).
All talks will take place in room C6 of the Mathematical Institute, University of Oxford.
