If you want a heavy-duty replacement part for your fifth wheel trailer's landing gear system, choose Stromberg Carlson Trailer Gearbox; if you need a secure, weather-resistant storage solution for your Chevy or GMC truck bed to keep tailgating gear safe, choose PIT66 Left Truck Bed.
These two products serve completely different purposes in the outdoor and vehicle ecosystem. One is an internal mechanical component designed to restore function to a massive RV jack, while the other is an external cargo container built to organize equipment on a pickup truck. The decision isn't about which is "better" in a general sense; it is entirely about whether your immediate problem involves a broken trailer mechanism or a cluttered, exposed truck bed. Getting this distinction right prevents wasted money and installation headaches.
• Stromberg Carlson Trailer Gearbox: Built from durable aluminum with a compact 3-pound footprint, this unit offers robust performance for fifth-wheel jacks but requires specific compatibility with Lippert, Venture, or Pac-Rim systems. It is strictly for RV owners facing landing gear failure.
• PIT66 Left Truck Bed: Constructed from upgraded ABS material with a slim profile, this box provides waterproof security and organization for tools but demands drilling and bracket installation on 1999–2007 Silverado/Sierra models. It is ideal for truck owners who need reliable storage without sacrificing bed space.
• Who each pick is for: Choose the Stromberg Carlson if you are stuck on the road with a non-functioning trailer leg; choose the PIT66 if you are preparing for a weekend of tailgating and need to protect your grills, chairs, and coolers from the elements.
This product exists solely to solve a mechanical crisis within the landing gear system of a fifth-wheel trailer. When the gearbox inside the jack assembly wears out, cracks, or fails to engage properly, the entire support structure becomes unreliable. The Stromberg Carlson Trailer Gearbox addresses this by offering a direct replacement that integrates seamlessly into existing setups. Its primary value lies in its construction; crafted from heavy-duty aluminum, it brings a level of durability required to handle the immense weight of a fifth-wheel rig when parked.
The design targets owners of trailers equipped with Lippert, Venture, or Pac-Rim landing gear motors. If your current setup uses one of these manufacturers, this gearbox fits as a bolt-on repair. The dimensions of roughly 5.9 x 7.4 x 3 inches suggest a compact form factor designed to fit within the tight confines of a standard landing gear housing. At just over three pounds, it is light enough to handle during installation but substantial enough to maintain structural integrity under load.

You should buy this unit if you are a DIY RV owner looking to avoid expensive professional service calls for a specific gear failure. It is not a universal upgrade for every trailer; it is a targeted fix for those specific brands. However, if your landing gear uses a different manufacturer or if the issue lies with the motor rather than the gears, this part will do nothing for you. It is purely a functional component, meant to get your trailer level and stable again, not to enhance aesthetics or add features.
For the truck owner, the challenge is often keeping gear organized and dry while maximizing the utility of the bed. The PIT66 Left Truck Bed Storage Box answers this by providing a dedicated, lockable space that sits along the side rail. Made from upgraded ABS material, it strikes a balance between being sturdy enough to withstand road vibrations and lightweight enough not to significantly impact fuel efficiency or handling. The box measures nearly 32 inches in length, offering ample room to store grills, propane tanks, folding tables, and other tailgating essentials.
Its most critical feature for outdoor enthusiasts is the waterproof seal. Unlike open beds where rain can soak your cooler or wind can scatter loose items, this box keeps moisture, dust, and snow out. The slim profile is specifically engineered to allow full use of the remaining truck bed space, meaning you don't have to sacrifice hauling capacity for storage. The left-side orientation is crucial here; it fits specifically on the driver's side of 1999–2007 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra models, ensuring a precise fit that aligns with the factory mounting points.
This product is for the person who treats their truck as a mobile base camp. Whether you are heading to a tailgate party or a job site, having a secure place to stash valuable tools and equipment is essential. The lockable design adds a layer of security against theft, which is a common concern when leaving gear unattended. While the installation process involves drilling holes and securing brackets with M8 bolts, the result is a permanent, rigid fixture that feels like part of the truck rather than an afterthought.
• Best for RV Landing Gear Repair: Choose Stromberg Carlson Trailer Gearbox if your fifth-wheel jack is failing and you need a compatible aluminum replacement for Lippert, Venture, or Pac-Rim systems.
• Best for Truck Cargo Security: Choose PIT66 Left Truck Bed if you need to lock away tools and tailgating supplies from rain, wind, and potential theft in your Silverado or Sierra.
• Best for Material Durability: The Stromberg unit relies on heavy-duty aluminum for mechanical strength, while the PIT66 uses high-grade ABS plastic for impact resistance and weatherproofing.
• Best for Installation Simplicity: The Stromberg part is a simple bolt-on swap for compatible gears, while the PIT66 requires drilling and bracket assembly for a secure fit.
• Best for Weather Protection: Only the PIT66 offers a sealed, waterproof environment for storing items; the Stromberg gearbox is an internal component that does not expose anything to the elements.
• Best for Vehicle Compatibility: Stromberg works with specific RV jack brands regardless of the tow vehicle, while PIT66 is strictly limited to 1999–2007 Chevy/GMC trucks.
• Best for Space Efficiency: The PIT66's slim design preserves bed utility, whereas the Stromberg gearbox is a hidden component with no impact on external cargo space.
In my opinion, if you are setting up for a weekend of tailgating, the PIT66 Left Truck Bed is the clear winner because it transforms your truck into a functional command center. You cannot tailgate effectively if your equipment is wet, lost, or stolen, and this box solves those problems immediately. It provides the organization and protection needed to enjoy the event without worrying about the weather or your gear. I would buy the PIT66 because it directly enhances the experience of using the truck for recreation, whereas the Stromberg gearbox is a necessary evil for fixing a broken machine. Choose the PIT66 to make your tailgating season better.
