SOCIAL ACTION PROJECT SHOWCASE
In order to create awareness, we had improved on the school garden and started planting fruits and some vegetables on the school garden. We personally believed that planting more fruits and vegetables will be helpful to the school since it is the best way to supplement meals for the learners and the community.
In order to educate learners, we encouraged physical activities since the garden required levels of physical strength and mobility.
Learners were taught:
Communication and teamwork in the garden
Learning how to grow good food
Learning about how to take care of the garden such as watering plants
Growing fruits and vegetables that they could sell for their Market day.
In order to involve parents and the community, we had asked some parents and the community to come and observe their children as they are in the garden. Parents and the community were also given a chance to act as volunteers and help out with the garden work.
We used this poster for learners to read and discover the importance of having a garden at school. Learners were reminded that having a garden is good and important because it teaches children the skills for survival.
First task
We started uprooting the grass from the garden and started cleaning the garden.
Second task
We started using garden tools in order to remove unwanted grass from the garden.
Third task
Learners also used garden tools to remove unwanted grass before we could start planting.
Forth task
We began by preparing the soil and started to plant strawberries.
We used dustbins and a wheelbarrow in order to collect all the unwanted grass from the garden.
We also watered the spinach that was grown, in order to keep it fresh and healthy. This was to support the school since the school supplements meals for the learners from the vegetables grown from the garden. Learners are also provided with fruits from the garden before breaktime.
The spinach from the garden is part of the school feeding scheme.
Fruits and vegetables from the garden also provide meals for the learners. Therefore, since we also planted strawberries learners will be provided with those strawberries during break time and they could even sell them for their market day.
Strawberries have grown, we made sure that we grouped learners into teams so that they could take turns to start watering the garden.
Some strawberries started showing which was a good improvement
Learners could sell strawberries on their market day!
