The job descriptions / terms of reference (TOR) detailed below describe the scope of work this project requires as well as identifying the personal requirements needed to join the team. Application forms are below the job descriptions / TOR.
Project Coordinator
One (1) position available, open to Kenyans and Ugandans
Recruitment dates: CLOSED
Applicants applying for this position must meet the following criteria:
Individual Requirements
Must be able to prove they are a citizen of Uganda or Kenya,
Must have a bank account or access to a bank account, a valid ID card, PIN/Social Security number, postal/physical address,
Must have a Post Graduate Diploma or higher in Media or Communications or similar field from a recognised Institution,
Must be familiar with online meeting platforms such as Zoom, Teams, Google Meet etc.
Must have good working knowledge of the media landscape in Uganda & Kenya,
Must have some working knowledge of mobile journalism & podcasting,
Must have access to a laptop & smartphone, data and WiFi,
Must be fluent in oral & written English as well as one other Ugandan/Kenyan dialects,
Must have access to transport - public or own,
Project Requirements
Will report directly to to GSMC & EC regulators of this project,
Will assist with hiring & assisting with training of Field Journalists in Kenya & Uganda,
Will be responsible for handing out equipment, ensuring that it is returned in good condition, based on schedules developed from a centralised agreed upon location,
Must be able to participate in the 5-day training as outlined under 'Project Goals & Outputs' & ensure that all journalists are aware of the sessions and attend,
Facilitate training beyond what is offered for field journalists if the stories they produce do not meet publication standards,
Coordinate with the field journalists to ensure delivery of stories post training for monitoring, evaluation and feedback.
Work with the journalists and media houses or platforms identified to produce a publishing schedule, for each of the five (5) stories being produced by the Field Journalists
Create a repository online of all work produced by the individual field journalists,
Create quarterly reports with updates on training, performance and interaction
Contribute to end of year and mid-year reports
Track attendance and interaction with field journalists
Track and monitor stories published; develop & share an analytics framework that identifies reach, engagement & impact & response to work created.
Hiring
The individual selected as the Project Coordinator will be hired via contract for a period of 15 months by The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media & Communications via the European Commission grant under the AKDN Regional Eastern Africa Covid-19 Response Partnership.
The individual selected for this position will be required to sign a legally binding contract governed by the laws of their country.
The contract signed will be for a period of 15 months from date of hire.
Payment
Payment for this position is $1,500 per month.
Payment will be made via bank transfer from AKU to the Individuals own account. All deductibles i.e. tax and bank charges will be borne by the recipient.
Field Journalists
Fifteen positions available:7 from Uganda, 7 from Kenya
Recruitment dates: Closed
Applicants applying for these positions must meet the following criteria:
Individual Requirements:
Must be able to prove that they are a citizen of Uganda or Kenya,
Must have a bank account or access to a bank account, a valid ID card, PIN/Social Security number, postal/physical address,
Must have a Bachelors in Journalism or Communication, or similar field, from a recognised Institution,
Must be between 21 - 28 years old
Must have basic understanding of social media & how to promote & tag post for audiences
Must be able to share a print, audio, video, photography or form of digital work published on legacy or established digital media platforms,
Must be able to speak English and at least one of their own national dialects fluently,
Be willing and able to travel to Kampala or Nairobi to collect and return equipment,
Must have access to a smartphone with data capabilities,
Project Requirements
Must commit to attend all the trainings provided under the project, and must commit to producing five (5) high-quality publishable stories by the end of the project period; both outputs are detailed under 'Project Goals & Outputs'
Will commit to feedback and evaluation of work from Project Coordinator and GSMC
Post training will produce a minimum of three (3) media outputs that will be submitted for evaluation and feedback prior to production of final five (5) stories.
Hiring
The individuals selected as Field Journalists will be hired via contract for a period of 14 months by The Aga Khan University Graduate School of Media & Communications via the European Commission grant under the AKDN Regional Eastern Africa Covid-19 Response Partnership.
Each individual selected for this position will be required to sign a legally binding contract governed by the laws of their country.
The contract signed will be for a period of 14 months from date of hire.
Payment
Payment for each story produced will be disbursed as follows:
Each field journalist will be entitled to $ 500 per story paid in arrears as follows:
50% of $500 ($250) will be paid to the field journalist upon submission of each story.
$1,250 will be paid after completion and submission of the 5th and final story and upon hand over of the all equipment issued at the time of commissioning.
