The Six Senses Hotel Resort Plan:
Opulence or Peril?
What’s at Stake
The serene landscapes of Hyde Park and Clinton, nestled within zip codes 12572, 12538, 12578, 12514, and 12580, are under threat. IHG (InterContinental Hotel Group PLC), a global corporation, aims to construct a luxury hotel resort on 200+ acres of natural wetlands, farmland, and forests along Route 9G. But this proposal transcends mere luxury—it poses irreversible consequences for our community and environment.
At the core of this debate lies IHG’s audacious Six Senses Plan, making its debut in the United States. Let’s dissect its components:
Dozens of New Buildings: IHG envisions a sprawling complex akin to a suburban subdivision or bustling shopping center, designed for 400 people daily. Structures will dot the landscape, altering its very fabric.
Multiple Swimming Pools and Pool Houses: Crystal-clear pools beckon, but their cost is steep. Resource consumption, ecosystem disruption to endangered species habitat, and pollution loom large.
A 40,000 Sq. Ft. Spa: Relaxation comes at an environmental price. The spa’s footprint will forever transform the land it occupies.
Central Wastewater Treatment Plant: Waste management is critical, but this enormous proposed plant threatens the historic Crum Elbow Creek (where they say they will dump wastewater). Our delicate ecosystem hangs in the balance.
Traffic, Access Roads and Vehicle Facilities: Multiple 2-lane roads to Route 9G mean exponential traffic (they estimate up to 600 more cars daily plus service trucks). Storage, parking, and maintenance facilities strain our infrastructure.
Preserving Our Way of Life: A Call to Action
The Town of Clinton, as the Lead Agency, stands at a crossroads. IHG, the multi-billion-dollar corporation, claims it isn’t planning a hotel—instead, it aims to exploit a previous Town of Clinton Special Use Permit meant for small conference centers. But let’s see through the smokescreen. IHG’s Six Senses brand proudly wears the mantle of the “#1 Hotel brand worldwide.”
Our Responsibility
As residents and stewards of our environment, we must raise our voices. Let them echo through hills, wetlands, and along the Crum Elbow Creek. We safeguard our rural character, wildlife, and the serenity that defines our home.
The Six Senses Resort Hotel may promise luxury, but it threatens to steal something far more precious: our way of life.
