Beauty from the Broken — hand crafted from re-purposed stone
1 Roughly marked out 14" stars on a countertop slab of travertine limestone.
2 The finer plottings of star's edges and contour plains.
3 After trimming the silhouette precisely, and shaving down the ridge-line slopes, I begin cutting the bevel planes of each leg.
4 Once all the planes are roughly cut, I carefully finesse their convergences to establish perfect symmetry.
5 After a lot of sanding and smoothing, the face of the star is pretty much done.
6 Now to prepare the backing pedestal and plate, which is needed for the keyhole slot hanging mechanism. It also functions as a spacer to hold the star a little bit away from the wall.
Here I am drilling the holes (under water) for the "cleat" screws which will bind the backing plate, pedestal and star together.
7 The pedestal holes and troughs (for the hanging mechanism) are complete.
8 Now to prepare the aluminum backing plate to complete the sandwich.
9 Here I'm finalizing the depth of the "cleat" anchors, which give extra security to the glue bond of the backing piece.
10 Trimming the stainless steel "cleat" screws to the exact length I need.
11 I've just glued the aluminum plate to the pedestal. Now I'm filling around the "cleat" anchors in the stone pedestal piece.
12 The pedestal/plate component is ready; the star's surface is prepared. Next, to glue them together.
13 There it is: the two "hey hole" slots are positioned over sloths in the pedestal stone, the seven "cleat" anchors extend all the way through into the star itself, for a solid device to mount it on a wall.
14 Last comes the signature, name, year, and serial number.
