STMicroelectronics A6986I Series: Advanced Features of 38 V, 5 W Synchronous Iso-Buck Converter Evaluation Boards

STMicroelectronics presents STEVAL-A6986IV1 and STEVAL-A6986IV2 boards, featuring the A6986I converter for precise voltage control. IV1 offers dual isolated outputs, while IV2 provides a single adjustable output, both without optocouplers, ideal for various applications.

STMicroelectronics introduces the STEVAL-A6986IV1 and STEVAL-A6986IV2 evaluation boards, showcasing the cutting-edge capabilities of the A6986I series converters. These boards are designed to cater to the diverse needs of applications demanding high performance and reliability in isolated power supplies.

The STEVAL-A6986IV1 stands out with its ability to generate two isolated voltages, approximately +18 V and between -4 V and -5 V. This feature makes it particularly suitable for applications requiring the supply of IGBT/SiC MOSFET gate drivers or a single isolated voltage through a straightforward bypass mechanism, eliminating the necessity for optocouplers. On the other hand, the STEVAL-A6986IV2 focuses on delivering a single isolated voltage, approximately 5 V, with easy adjustability to meet specific application requirements without relying on optocouplers for isolation.

Both evaluation boards incorporate the automotive-grade AEC-Q100 qualified A6986I converter, ensuring exceptional primary output voltage control and efficient generation of isolated secondary outputs through a dedicated transformer. The A6986I's primary sink capability, typically 1.9 A, facilitates seamless energy transfer to the secondary side, enabling a well-coordinated soft-start mechanism for the secondary output. The control loop operates on a peak current mode architecture with forced PWM operation, ensuring stable performance under varying load conditions.

Furthermore, the boards feature a 300 ns blanking time to filter out oscillations caused by transformer leakage inductance, enhancing the overall robustness of the solution. Pulse by pulse current sensing on both power elements implements effective constant current protection on the primary side, enhancing system reliability. Additionally, the primary reverse current limit safeguards the secondary output against short-circuit events, while the secondary voltage is stabilized against overcurrent using a power transistor and a shunt voltage reference (TL431), ensuring optimal performance and protection mechanisms across the board.
