Our aim in Mathematics is to cultivate confident, resilient, and numerate individuals who can think logically, analytically, and critically. Mathematics is a powerful tool for understanding the world, from science and technology to finance and problem-solving in daily life. Our curriculum aims to ensure all pupils leave with a strong mathematical fluency and an appreciation for the utility of the subject.
The Mathematics curriculum is structured to develop four core areas:
Conceptual Understanding: Getting a deep understanding of how mathematical concepts, principles, and relationships all connect.
Fluency and Procedural Skills: Being able to do calculations quickly and correctly—making sure the basics are automatic and efficient.
Mathematical Reasoning and Problem Solving: Learning how to use math knowledge in new and unfamiliar situations, figure things out logically, and explain your thinking clearly.
Positive Attitudes: Encouraging pupils to be curious, resilient, and believe they can improve (a growth mindset).
The S1-S3 BGE phase is foundational, ensuring pupils achieve the required skills and benchmarks across the Curriculum for Excellence organisers (Number, Money & Measure; Shape, Position & Movement; and Information Handling).
The focus is on providing a rich, varied, and engaging learning experience through a wide variety of teaching and learning methodologies to cater to diverse learning styles and foster deeper engagement. For example: online programmes e.g.Mathsworkout, active learning e.g. treasure hunts and peer/group work. This all-around approach gives every pupil a solid foundation of knowledge and skills and boosts their ability to think critically, setting them up perfectly for the specialised subjects they'll choose in the Senior Phase.
In the Senior Phase, pupils select courses that align with their career aspirations and learning strengths, including National Qualifications (National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher). We offer both Mathematics and Applications of Mathematics courses which allows every pupil to study a course which suits their skills.
