Back to scratches. Lensrentals has a massive inventory of lenses, and some are undergoing repairs at any given time. A frequent repair is replacing front elements. It makes sense. Of all the glass in your lens, only the front element is regularly exposed to risk. As we've alluded to, there's a sizable filter market designed to mitigate that risk. After pulling some scratched lenses from the repair department, the main takeaway is that front element scratches 'reduce the contrast and sharpness of your images.' Unsurprisingly, the image quality issue is localized almost entirely to the scratch.

With that said, I never use UV filters. I like using NDs and polarizers, so once you start stacking filters you quickly end up with vignetting. And I've had multiple times where the threads on UV filters are too tight, so the next filter you put on would get stuck and it's incredibly frustrating to try and pry them apart.

I saw first hand a Canon 70-200, front element facing down, drop straight onto asphalt from 4 feet with the UV filter attached. The filter broke and the front glass didn't. But, it still warped the filter thread and in the end the whole front part had to be replaced, glass included.

Another question slightly related when storing any lens if left standing-up for long period any chance the lubricants in the lens will seep downwards in time. Zoom lenses in particular with lubricant for zoom action. Somewhat depends on the temperature while in storage?

@stevo no matter how good the filter, it will introduce flare. Lensrentals sends out gear with really good filters and in some scenarios you can catch strays. You do need quality filters and the will impact the cost of ownership and along with a good, they can save your lens from heavy damage if dropped.

Filters can be helpful only in the following situation: a sandy or dusty environment like on the beach or in the desert. Or when doing certain types of photography that may get small cobbles thrown at you.

For me it is evident that scratches at the outer side of the lens don't have any effect at the Image quality because the light beam surely is inside the scratched part of the lens.

Better would be an example with scratches more in the center of the lens.

I am not a fan of putting any in front of my lens unless I am shooting in rain, I remember back in the days Canon claimed you need a filter to get the full water resistance on some L lenses such as those 17-40Land 16-35L, so I still keep a few just for that situation. as I shoot in rain quite a bit to cover events, like the Lunar New Year street fair and parade, many many time that event is in rain, so I keep a few 77mm for my 24-70 and 70-200. not sure if modern lens still require that but I just keep that habit when shooting in rain.

I wish there were a reliable way to source lens parts like front elements. I got a really scratched up 24-120 f4 newer version cheap. I found a front element on Ali Express. Took a few weeks to get but the lens is perfect. I have most tools to be able to replace them myself.

Scratches, dust particles and other "imperfections" on the front element of the lens are highly visible when you have a bright source of light in frame or hittin the surface of said element. Off course in the case shown by Lensrentals you can't see anything.
