Language Buddy is a native mobile application, created as a bootcamp project. Language Buddy focuses on creating an interactive language learning experience.

Users need an easy way to define, categorize, reference, and study new vocabulary so they can move forward confidently towards reaching their language goals.
Create an application that allows for real-time translation along with a fun and systematic way of studying. A comprehensive analysis of the competitors in the market was completed and although some competitors incorporate features that allow for real-time translation, they lack the ability to create fun and systematic ways of learning.
To better understand the needs of our users, I conducted user interviews and usability tests. User interviews helped identify general user attitudes and helped pinpoint desired features for our translation flashcard application. Usability tests helped recognize pain points and identify users' design preferences.

Short micro-learning sessions are preferred
We wanted to form a deeper understanding of our users' goals, needs, experiences, and behaviors so we created a proto-persona, Leslie, to represent segments of our user base. Leslie is based on user interviews and and helped influence all major design decisions. We used our persona whenever we needed to step out of ourselves and reconsider our initial ideas.
With the goals of our personas in mind, we began to identify the steps users will take to complete main functions of the application. We sketched a user journey map to identify how users will perform these actions.
There were two main use cases identified:
Translating a word, phrase or sentence and saving it.
Accessing saved translations.
Using Balsamiq, I translated my user flows into low-fidelity wireframes. At this stage, the wireframes were defined enough for some initial user testing. 5 user tests were performed and feedback was collected. Minor alternations were made to enhance the app before moving on to creating high-fidelity prototypes.
I created a fully-functional prototype out of my low-fidelity wireframes using Marvel. At the same time, I started recruiting subjects who fit our criteria. I first completed a round of usability testing with 5 participants, resulting in the discovery of 4 severe issues. I used Jakob Nielsen's error severity rating scale to validate issues prioritize relevant issue, and determine solutions. I then implemented the applicable fixes.
User Testing feedback was used to improve our low-fidelity prototype.
The scope of this project then called for our deliverables to be handed off for further UI design. After delivery of assets, I will work closely with the UI designer and development team on future iterations and conducting more user testing.
Final deliverables at this stage include our persona, user flows, low-fidelity wireframes, user testing feedback and a prototype.
