"Tutoring has emerged as an especially promising strategy for supporting students academically. This study synthesizes 33 articles on the implementation of tutoring, defined as one-to-one or small-group instruction in which a human tutor supports students grades K-12 in an academic subject, to better understand the facilitators and barriers to program success."

Meet Robert Stone
My name is Robert Stone, and I’ve been supporting students and families in education for over 25 years. Since graduating from college in Massachusetts in 2000, my work has always been guided by one belief: every child can grow and succeed when they feel understood, supported, and believed in.
I began tutoring students outside of the classroom in 2004 and quickly saw how powerful individualized support can be. Over the years, I’ve helped students build the skills and confidence they need to meet grade-level expectations—often after they had already begun to doubt themselves. Watching students gain confidence in their abilities is what continues to motivate me every day.
I have worked with a wide range of learners, including: Students who are below, at, or above grade level, students with learning differences or attention challenges, students who feel frustrated, anxious, or discouraged by school. Building trust is always my first priority. Once students feel safe and supported, they are willing to take risks, ask questions, and push themselves in ways they didn’t think were possible.
Early in my career, I worked at The May Institute, a brain injury clinic in Massachusetts. This experience deeply shaped my approach to teaching and gave me a lasting passion for working with students of all abilities and needs. From there, I moved into public education, teaching in a self-contained classroom for students with behavioral needs, where patience, empathy, and consistency were essential.
In 2010, I earned my Master’s Degree in Education, along with a certificate in Autism, further strengthening my ability to support diverse learners. I went on to teach middle school special education, followed by six years of middle school math, where I developed a strong connection with adolescents during a critical stage of growth.
For the past five years, I’ve had the joy of teaching 5th grade in Lafayette, which has become my favorite age to teach. At the same time, I continue to connect exceptionally well with middle school students and understand the academic and emotional challenges they face.
Through tutoring, my goal is not just to improve academic skills—but to help students feel capable, confident, and proud of their progress. I partner closely with families to ensure students receive the encouragement and support they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom.
"Mr. Stone helped me understand math when I was in 6th grade. I didn't understand fractions but he helped me learn in a way that I could understand them. He helped me with homework though my 8th grade year and it made me a better student." -Paige Cunningham
"My son had Mr. Stone in Middle School and he said,” He is the Best Math Teacher I have ever had because he is fun and keeps it interesting.” Then I hired Mr Stone to tutor both my kids. He helped us for years! My children never made a fuss about the tutoring sessions. They always wanted to see Mr. Stone. We all recommend him and you will be very happy, and your child will too! He is a very good person as well and will incorporate your child’s interests into math problems." -Becky Cunningham
"Mr. Stone worked with my daughter Sophie and helped her with her math HW and building confidence with missing fraction and number sense skills. Mr. Stone also worked with Sophie on her writing. She gained confidence in her skills and we really appreciated the patience and support that Mr. Stone provided."- Joe Ranallo
"Mr Stone worked with me on my math homework and it helped me a lot when I went back to class. I had more confidence and I was finally understanding the math. He also worked with me on my writing. Getting started with essays was always so hard for me, but he helped me created interesting topic parargraphs that I could use to create better paragraphs. I really glad he was able to work with me."
