This policy describes how the Stepnote Chrome extension, version 1.1.2, handles data.
Stepnote turns webpage workflows that you choose to record into editable tutorials. No account is required. Tutorials and screenshots stay in your current browser profile unless you export or share them yourself.
1. Information processed
When you start a recording, Stepnote processes supported clicks and form-change events, control labels, click positions, timestamps, page titles, page addresses, and visible-area screenshots. It also stores tutorial titles, step descriptions, notes, and images or backup files that you choose to add.
Page addresses saved with tutorial steps retain the website origin and URL path. Query strings, URL fragments, and embedded usernames or passwords are removed from those saved addresses. URL paths and page titles can still contain personal information.
Step text does not record form input values. Password fields and controls marked as private are excluded from automatic step generation. Screenshots, webpage labels, imported content, and text you write may still contain personal or sensitive information displayed on a page.
2. Purpose and local storage
Stepnote uses this information to record, create, edit, save, display, and export tutorials.
Tutorials and screenshots are stored in the extension's local IndexedDB database for your Chrome profile.
Preferences, including interface language, tutorial language, and masking settings, are stored in chrome.storage.local.
Temporary recording state, including the tutorial ID, tab ID, step count, and paused status, is kept in chrome.storage.session.
Version 1.1.2 does not upload recorded page content or screenshots to the developer or third-party servers. It does not use analytics, advertising, remote AI services, or Chrome sync storage for tutorials.
3. Permissions
activeTab: provides temporary access to a webpage after you invoke the extension, supporting page information access and visible-area screenshots.
scripting: allows Stepnote to inject its packaged recording script into a webpage you authorize for recording.
storage: saves preferences and temporary recording state.
Stepnote records only during a recording you start. Switching tabs or navigating to a different website pauses recording. It does not request permanent access to all websites.
4. Your controls and screenshot masking
You can start, pause, resume, and finish recording; edit or delete steps and tutorials; replace screenshots; and export or import backups.
Automatic masking is enabled by default for common form fields, supported fields inside open web components, and embedded page regions. You can also manually cover sensitive areas in the editor. Saving manual masking replaces the stored screenshot with the masked image.
Masking cannot guarantee that every sensitive detail is hidden. Plain page text, closed web components, overlays, and changing page content may remain visible. Disabling automatic masking can expose form values in screenshots. Review screenshots, titles, notes, and URL paths before exporting or sharing.
5. Sharing and disclosure
The extension does not sell tutorial data, send it to advertisers or data brokers, use it for credit assessment, or use it for unrelated purposes. The developer cannot access your locally stored tutorials through the extension.
You decide whether to export a tutorial or share an exported file. Any recipient or service you choose to share with will handle that file under its own practices. Stepnote does not automatically send your exports to those recipients or services.
6. Retention and deletion
Saved tutorials remain in the local browser profile until you delete them, remove the relevant extension data, or uninstall Stepnote. Deleting a tutorial removes its steps and screenshots from the extension's database. The extension cannot restore deleted tutorials.
Uninstalling Stepnote removes its locally stored extension data. Ending a recording or closing the browser does not delete saved tutorials. Exported or downloaded files remain wherever you saved them and must be managed or deleted separately. Export a backup before uninstalling if you want to keep your tutorials.
7. Limited Use
Stepnote's use of user data complies with the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including its Limited Use requirements. Data accessed by the extension is used only for its disclosed tutorial recording, editing, storage, and export features.
8. This policy page and support email
This policy page is hosted on Google Sites. Visiting that website is separate from using the extension; Google's handling of website-visit data is governed by Google's privacy policy.
If you choose to email the developer, your email address and the information you include will be received through Gmail and used to respond to your request. This does not give the developer access to tutorials stored on your device. Avoid sending passwords or unnecessary sensitive page content.
9. Changes and contact
If a future version changes how Stepnote handles data, this policy will be updated to describe the changes. New data handling that requires notice or consent will be disclosed before it takes effect.
