WWDC 2024: everything you need to know about this event on the horizon
PUBLISHED: JUN 06, 2024, 3:06 PM
WWDC 2024 is Apple's annual developer conference that will take place June 10-14, 2024. The main event will be the keynote on June 10, streamed live on Apple's YouTube channel and on the website Apple events web.
At this conference, Apple is expected to present the next versions of its operating systems for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch - iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and watchOS 11. The main expected announcements are:
1. Integrating generative AI into iPhone and iPad apps, such as photo/video editing tools, automatic summary for FaceTime, and AI-powered productivity features.
2. A major update to Siri, with better natural language understanding, better search capabilities, and access to generative AI features.
3. New AI-centric features in iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, like auto-replies to emails, AI-driven editing in Photos, and more.
4. Improvements to health and fitness tracking on watchOS 11, likely powered by AI.
If you're looking for information about the conference, its keynote and what Apple will reveal, you've come to the right place.
WWDC 2024: How to watch?
The main event of the WWDC 2024 conference is the keynote on June 10. The conference will begin at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET and will be streamed on Apple's YouTube channel (embedded video above, so you can watch it from there as well), as well as on Apple's events website Apple.
If you have an Apple device, you can also watch the event from Apple's Developer app on iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac; or from the Apple TV app on supported devices.
The conference will officially take place June 10-14, but the majority of announcements will take place on the first day of the conference.
WWDC 2024: what to expect?
Big improvements to Siri
Siri is rumored to be getting a proper AI upgrade, likely with the help of ChatGPT. In fact, quite notable advances are expected: for example better understanding of natural language, better search capabilities and access to generative AI functionalities.
Siri has been around for a while and was arguably the one that started the whole virtual assistant thing on phones. But in recent years, it has been lacking compared to some of its competitors. However, we expect Apple to bring it back into contention with intelligent AI features that should transform Siri and the experience of using it.
iOS 18, iPad OS 18 and watchOS 11
Of course, like every year, we expect the next operating systems for iPhone and iPad to be presented at the event. Key features will be detailed and exciting new features will be revealed for all of us to get excited about.
iOS 18
iOS 18 will most likely focus on the aforementioned AI features with ChatGPT integration (rumored). Alongside a smarter Siri, you can expect AI responses to emails, AI-driven editing in Photos, and even intelligent playlist composition in Apple Music. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, iOS 18 will be the biggest iPhone software update in the device's history (at least that's what we know internally at Apple). This makes me really excited.
iPad OS 18
We expect iPad OS 18 to be built on the same AI principle. Of course, the focus here will likely be on productivity and creativity. New advancements will also likely benefit from the new M4 chip in the new iPad Pro models, and likely the M2 in the iPad Air.
watchOS 11
We'll also likely see the same AI improvements on Apple's smartwatch operating system. We'll see what features watchOS 11 will bring. Perhaps we'll see health and fitness-centric, AI-powered features (which will most likely be addressed on the iPhone), and more customization of these features.
VisionPro Update
You can also expect the first major update to Apple's mixed reality (spatial computing, as Apple calls it) headset to be detailed at the event. It's unclear what exactly this update will offer, so we'll have to wait and see.
Finally, It's likely we won't see any new material during the conference. So don't expect new AirPods, iPhone... Sure, Apple might show us a new color for the iPhone 15, but it's unlikely we'll see an iPhone SE 4 or new entry iPad yet of range.
this WWDC 2024 focused mainly on software and AI.
