Chrome for Android and iOS Introduces Key Summarization Feature
Published: Oct 13, 2025, 9:58 PM
Navigating some webpages can be quite challenging, wouldn't you agree? If you're using the Chrome browser on Android, a new tool is being integrated into the app to help clarify website content. This feature utilizes AI, and as you might expect, it involves Google's Gemini technology.
New Gemini Overlay with Summarization Feature
The Gemini overlay is now available on the stable version of Android 16 and the latest Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2 update. It features a bottom-to-top interface starting with a prompt where you can pose questions for Gemini to answer. There’s an "ask about page" button that enables you to request clarifications on specific sections of a webpage. This button also allows for comparisons between two items mentioned on the page. The highlight is the new "Summarize" button, which offers a summary of the current webpage.
To access this feature on your Pixel phone, open the Chrome browser and load a website. Long press the power button to activate the Gemini Overlay. By tapping the Summarize button, you’ll receive a concise overview of the page. This feature works not only for articles read in Chrome but also for search results and stories in the Google News app.
Understand Lengthy Webpages with Gemini's Summarization
Above the Summarize button, you'll find the "Share screen with Live" option. When selected, Gemini Live analyzes what’s displayed on your phone, transforming it into a powerful visual assistant. For instance, if you’re using a shopping app, you can gather more details about a specific item and compare it with others. If you're viewing directions, Gemini can help interpret them, aiding in tasks like assembling complex items.
The Summarize button is available for both Android and iOS. On iOS, open the Chrome app and navigate to a website. To summarize a story, tap the icon resembling a stack of paper with a "+" sign on the left side of the address bar. A pop-up will appear with "Page tools," offering options to "Search screen" or "Ask Gemini." Select the Gemini sparkle icon to access the overlay, then press the Summarize button to see the content summary.
Make Gemini Your Digital Assistant on Android
To utilize this feature, ensure that the Gemini app is installed on your device. For Android users, you can download the app from the Play Store. iPhone users can find Gemini on the App Store via the provided link.
I have several AI applications on my phones. My Pixel 6 Pro, running Android 16 QPR2 Beta 2, uses Gemini instead of Google Assistant, which I highly recommend for Pixel users seeking more detailed responses. You can switch by opening the Gemini app, tapping the profile icon in the upper right, and navigating to Settings > Digital assistants from Google to choose between Gemini and Google Assistant.
In summary, I believe Gemini is the superior option. It provides comprehensive answers to your questions, summarizes websites, and also allows you to set alarms and timers.
