Rumors suggest that Android 16 could launch as soon as June 3, with Pixel phones first in line for the update, followed by other supported models.
Google has already showcased much of what’s new during its annual Google I/O conference. We expect a refreshed design, some long-requested changes, and thoughtful upgrades to what works well in Android 15. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect.
Taking a cue from iOS, Android 16 will introduce Live Updates, similar to Live Activities. This feature will enable real-time tracking for apps like food delivery and sports. Updates will be visible on your lock screen (with Always-On display) or in notifications. Additionally, Google adds buttons for Calls, Messages, and Tips within the Live Update feature.
Material 3 Expressive is Google's new design language for Android 16, applicable to both phones and tablets. Building on Material Design 3, it features more expressive animations, larger buttons, bolder fonts, and other refinements to enhance the user experience. With Material 3 Expressive, the OS will feel more responsive, thanks to improved animations and haptic feedback. Note that this feature won’t be available at the Android 16 launch in June but will arrive later in the year.
The HEIC format, which saves space compared to JPEGs, hasn’t supported Ultra HDR on Android until now. With Android 16, this will change, allowing photos to have a higher dynamic range and richer colors. Google is also working on Ultra HDR support for AVIF images, expected to come in the future.
Another iOS-inspired change in Android 16 is a revamped Quick Settings panel. Google is introducing resizable toggles, while the one-click Wi-Fi and Bluetooth toggles will return. Additionally, tiles will have a new look and occupy less space. When you expand the Quick Settings panel, the background will blur for a depth effect. This update will also launch later in the year.
The new Advanced Protection Mode consolidates major security settings in one place, eliminating the need to dig through the OS. You’ll be able to toggle each setting from one location, even if they belong to different Android categories. Features include Theft Detection Lock, Offline Device Lock, USB Protection, Google Play Protect, Safe Browsing, and other important security measures.
A new feature, Intrusion Logging, will provide an end-to-end encrypted log stored in the cloud for analysis after a breach. Another addition is Inactivity Reboot, which will restart your device if left idle for 72 hours. Some features won’t be available at the initial Android 16 release but will go live later in the year. However, Advanced Protection will be included in the initial release.
This fun new feature discovered in the Beta phase allows for AI-powered weather effects, adding animated rain, snow, or other weather elements to your custom wallpaper photos. The Cinematic option will transform your wallpaper into a 3D image that moves as you tilt your phone. Keep in mind that this feature may not be ideal for those prone to motion sickness.
