Apple is anticipated to launch its foldable iPhone next year, coinciding with the release of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the standard model debuting later. Not wanting to fall behind in this emerging product category, Samsung is reportedly developing a new Galaxy Z Fold model inspired by the foldable iPhone.
A recent report indicates that Samsung is creating a new foldable model tentatively named the Galaxy Z Wide Fold. This model will not replace the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 8 but will be offered alongside it as an alternative for consumers.
While the Fold 8 will maintain the proportions of the highly regarded Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Galaxy Z Wide Fold is expected to adopt a design resembling that of the foldable iPhone. Apple is reportedly pursuing an innovative, yet familiar, design approach for its foldable iPhone.
According to the report, the Galaxy Z Wide Fold will reportedly have specifications closely mirroring those of the foldable iPhone. The foldable iPhone is expected to feature a main display measuring 7.56 inches, with an outer display of 5.49 inches. In comparison, Samsung's new model is set to have a main display of 7.6 inches—identical to that of the Galaxy Z Fold 6—and an exterior display at 5.4 inches. Both devices aim for a 4:3 aspect ratio for their main displays when unfolded.
The Galaxy Z Wide Fold is also expected to include 25W wireless charging, which will debut with the Galaxy S26 Ultra early next year. It's still uncertain whether the Wide Fold will have a thicker chassis and a heavier weight profile, as recently leaked specifications for the foldable iPhone suggest.
Honestly, I'm not surprised by this development. It seems that Samsung has been keen on mirroring Apple's innovations recently, which isn't necessarily a positive trend. This news follows closely after the launch of the Galaxy S25 Edge, a direct response to the iPhone Air.
From my perspective, it appears that Samsung is developing this new foldable primarily to compete with Apple's model and to establish a foothold in this emerging market, should it gain traction. However, similar to the Galaxy S26 Edge, I wouldn’t be shocked if Samsung decides to cancel this model soon after its release due to disappointing sales.
