About me
I am an Associate Professor of Accounting at the University of Melbourne. I began my academic journey at the University of Graz, completing four undergraduate and masters degrees in business administration (focus on accounting) and sociology within five years (between 2004 and 2009). From 2010 to 2014, I was part of the inaugural Doctoral Program in Accounting, Reporting and Taxation (DART) at the Universities of Graz and Vienna and the Vienna University of Economics and Business, and I spent a year visiting the Accounting Department at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the University of Melbourne as a Senior Lecturer in September 2015, I held a visiting position at Purdue University (August 2014–May 2015).
Between 2005 and 2010, I gained professional experience through internships and freelance work in assurance services (PwC, Vienna, Austria), mid-office corporate treasury (Mondi Group, Vienna Austria), management consulting (ICG, Graz Austria), automotive market research (formerly TNS Infratest, now Kantar TNS, Munich Germany), and international trade (Advantage Austria, Warsaw, Poland). During my PhD and until my visit at Wharton, I also worked part-time as an auditing associate (Moore Stephens, Graz, Austria) with clients in the tourism and aviation industries.
My research lies at the intersection of accounting, finance, economics, and law. I develop microeconomic models to explain empirical regularities and mixed evidence on firms’ financial reporting and disclosure behavior, as well as on capital market participants’ information, investment, and engagement decisions. My work also provides guidance for regulatory policy and disclosure mandates. My research was published in some of the leading academic accounting journals, including the Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research, and Review of Accounting Studies. I further frequently serve as an ad hoc reviewer for Contemporary Accounting Research, Management Science, Review of Accounting Studies, and The Accounting Review. Since the beginning of my PhD in 2010, I was invited to give over 70 research presentations at notable institutions and conferences worldwide, including at the 2018 Journal of Accounting Research Conference hosted by the Booth School of the University of Chicago.
My teaching portfolio encompasses introductory, intermediate, and capstone courses in financial, managerial, and sustainability accounting across undergraduate, graduate, and PhD programs. At the University of Melbourne, I am currently redeveloping, coodinating, and teaching ACCT10001 Accounting Reports and Analysis, the introductory accounting subject in the undergraduate program. I further serve as an academic mentor to many undergraduate students and have served on the supervisory committees of several of my department's PhD students.
