Mickey Mouse is arguably the most beloved Disney character and he got his debut performance in November of 1928 in the animated short Steamboat Willie. Steamboat Willie marks a turning point in the world of cartoon entertainment, as it was the first cartoon to use synchronized sound. This technological advance opened the door for music of the era to take a ride on a new venue and broaden its reach as a popular song of the day.

The first two cartoons were silent and were titled "Plane Crazy" and "Gallopin' Gaucho," but Walt could not find a distributor interested in them. Musician Carl Stalling would later compose musical scores to add to both the films that would be released after "Steamboat Willie" to take advantage of Mickey's overnight success.

But these mostly musical sing-a-longs were not a success and quickly forgotten, just as was the animated Aesop Fable, "Dinner Time" (released October 1928) that Walt saw being recorded with synchronized sound when he was in New York working on "Steamboat Willie." However the soundtrack in that Aesop's Fable was a cacophony and a novelty, whereas the synchronized sound in "Steamboat Willie" was used to emphasize humor and help the story.

"Steamboat Willie" was the first cartoon to successfully integrate music, voice, and effects into an entertaining and believable product, which included a likeable main character and a clear story. That helps explain why it made such a huge, immediate impact on audiences.

The song recounts the story of Steamboat Bill who commands the steamboat named the Whippoorwill in its efforts to beat the record of the famous steamboat, the Robert E. Lee, which in 1870 set a record time covering the stretch between New Orleans and St. Louis. In the song, the Whippoorwill is pushed beyond its limits and its boiler explodes, sending Bill and a gambler high in the air, where Bill bets another $1000 that he'll go higher than the gambler.

It is important to remember that Pete is not really a villain in this cartoon. He may be a bully but basically as the captain of the steamboat, he wants his only crewmember, Mickey, to do the job he is supposed to be doing rather than goofing off.

Notice that when Mickey arrives at the Podunk Landing pier, it is filled with animals and boxes. Walt's original story script also included a rooster and the mother pig and her nursing children who appear later on board. After Mickey loads the cow, there is a quick cut to Minnie running toward the landing and then a quick cut back to see that Mickey has apparently in that brief moment loaded all the animals and freight on board the steamboat (not to mention the rowboat in the background that appears in medium shots but disappears in long shots).

The film begins with Mickey (nicknamed Steamboat Willie in this short) piloting a steamboat down a river, happily whistling along to the tune of "Steamboat Bill". He pulls a rope to sound the steamboat's three whistles. The tall and medium whistle sound off in synch but the shortest one stays quiet until it receives a good hit from the medium one. Unbeknownst to Mickey, an angry Captain Peg Leg Pete appears behind him and grabs Mickey's torso, stretching it in the process and switches places with him behind the wheel.

Just then, Minnie Mouse appears on the scene running to catch up to Steamboat Willie. Mickey jumps aboard the ship and takes off leaving Minnie yelling at the dock. She proceeds to run alongside the river after the steamboat. Calling for help, Mickey hears her and decides to lower the crane to catch her. The crane is lowered by Minnie and the hook proceeds to gently lift her skirt up and grab hold of her bloomers carrying her onto the ship. As she is lowered, Minnie drops her fiddle and "Turkey in the Straw" sheet music which bounces over to a goat.

The goat sees it and begins to eat the sheet music. Minnie is lowered to the ship and the hook pulls her skirt back down. Minnie is happy to see Mickey and turns shyly away to see the goat eating her sheet music. The goat then starts on the fiddle and Mickey attempts to yank it out of his mouth. Mickey struggles but can't pull it out and falls on the ground launching the fiddle into the goat's body which proceeds to bounce around causing music notes to sound. Mickey hears this and gets the idea to use the goat as a phonograph. He opens the goat's mouth and calls Minnie over.

The fronts of the ears have silkscreened images of Mickey Mouse at the wheel and Pete confronting Mickey on twill fabric. The edges of the ears and headband are trimmed in white twisted nautical cording. The ears also include various 3-D plastic elements, like a musical note and life preserver.

Still, Vevo will face big challenges in its efforts to be seen as a premier destination for music video. One potential complication: Many consider the Google-owned YouTube to be synonymous with online video. But Vevo and Google are not outright competitors. In fact, Google (GOOG) is part owner of Vevo, while Vevo views YouTube as a distribution partner (every time you watch a Vevo video on YouTube, both sites get a share of the ad revenue). But Vevo is now pushing music fans to watch its videos on its own platform rather than on YouTube, potentially straining a complex relationship.

The role that the music has in the short film is to showcase the atmosphere that goes alongside with the animation itself, the music would then change based on what the animation is displaying on the screen like how Minnie Mouse can be seen running quickly to try and reach the steamboat with the music evoking a panicking atmosphere based on the expression that she makes when going to the docks in a hurry.

Steamboat Willie," directed by Walt Disney and his partner Ub Iwerks and among the first cartoons to have sound synced with its visuals, was actually the third cartoon featuring Mickey and Minnie the men made, but the first to be released. It features a more menacing Mickey captaining a boat and making musical instruments out of other animals. ff782bc1db
