Group: 3 preschoolers aged 6-7, 1 boy and 2 girls.
Group activity with duration approximately 15 minutes.
The aim was to show children that objects of different weights can be compared. Like which is heavier and which is lighter. The heavier object is at the bottom and the lighter object is at the top.
First, I showed the children a video of how this Lever is made. We talked about what a 3D printer is and how it differs from a regular printer. At first I offered to put Lever together for the children and one boy wanted to do it. The children then looked for different toys from the group that we could put on Lever. The children brought all kinds of animals, lego blocks, soft balls. Each child could put different things on Lever and try which object was lighter or heavier. They also tried to make towers of different heights than the legos to test how the gravity changes.
I asked the children that if there are heavy stones in the home that need to be moved from one place to another, what can be used for that? One child said it was a garden cart. After experimenting with Lever, we went outside and used a garden cart to transport the sandbox toys that day. The kids took the toys and we took them all to the sandbox with the cart.
The children were very interested throughout the activity and always wanted to add more. They were interested in how things would stay there for Lever. The advantage of the activity was that there were few children in the activity and the children did not have to wait long to try new items.
