With the creation of the steam machines and the steam controller, it kind of makes sense to turn on the steam machine via the steam controller... but is it possible? If so, will it be possible with a regular PC? That'd be pretty neat!

There are many posts about the display not sleeping when idle. It will not turn off after inactivity, neither from the desktop, nor from the lock screen. I've tried everything!? This is on a PC (not laptop) running Windows 10 Pro.

well for me it was the gamepad and also daemon tools and steam clients. once i closed steam and daemon tools the monitor was sleeping after 1 minute. so check what is open on your PC tray. hope it will help you.

I had the same issue with the exact same symptoms after updating to Windows 20H2 (most notably, nothing in powercfg /requests). I had an Xbox 360 wireless receiver (knock-off) with a driver from 2009. I updated it to the 2019 driver and my computer now sleeps again. Your post clued me into the issue, thanks!

Usually, restarting the application will usually (not always) fix the problem and might not prevent the monitor going into standby on the next timeout, so it is best to close Steam if away from the computer for extended period and want your monitor to enter standby.

Steam Family Library Sharing allows family members and their guests to play one another's games while earning their own Steam achievements and saving their own game progress to the Steam Cloud. It's all enabled by authorizing shared computers and users.

Ever wish you could wake your computer out of sleep mode without trudging over to it and pressing the power button? Wake-on-LAN allows you to turn your computer on using its network connection, so you can start it up from anywhere in the house with the tap of a button.

For example, I often use Chrome Remote Desktop to access my workstation upstairs. But if my workstation is sleeping, I don't need to go upstairs and turn it on first. Wake-on-LAN allows me to wake that computer up with a "magic packet" sent from my phone or laptop, so I can remote in without hassle.

Wake-on-LAN has a few caveats when it comes to support. First, the network card of the computer being woken up needs to support the feature. Pretty much any modern Ethernet adapter will support Wake-on-LAN, but wireless adapters rarely do.

This means the device sending the magic packet can be on Wi-Fi, but the one receiving it will likely need to be plugged in via Ethernet for this to work. Check your computer's documentation or BIOS to see if it supports Wake-on-Wireless-LAN (or Wake-on-WLAN).

Some computers may only support Wake-on-LAN from sleep, while others may allow you to wake up from a powered off state. You may need to tweak your power options in your BIOS or in Windows' Control Panel under Hardware and Sound > Power Options.

Some people find that they need to disable their computer's fast startup feature for this to work. If you otherwise can't get Wake-on-LAN to work properly, try turning it off. Click Choose what the power buttons do or Choose what closing the lid does, then click Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Finally, to wake up your computer over the network, you'll need a Wake-on-LAN app on another device, such as your phone or laptop. Some programs already come with Wake-on-LAN built-in, including ones you already own. In other cases, you may need a separate program to wake up your PC.

You can wake your computer up from an iPhone or iPad with Mocha WOL or Android device with Wake On Lan. These apps allow you to scan your network for devices or manually enter the IP and MAC address of the computer you want to wake up.

If all goes well, your computer should wake right up when you hit the wake up button. If not, check its BIOS settings, Windows settings, and the configuration of your Wake-on-LAN app to make sure everything is set properly for your specific hardware.

With some third-party programs, disk write caching has to be turned on or off. Additionally, turning disk write caching on may increase operating system performance; however, it may also result in the loss of information if a power failure, equipment failure, or software failure occurs. This article describes how to turn disk write caching on or off.

Is Steam opening automatically when you boot your computer? It can be super frustrating if an already slow booting process takes even longer because Steam launches and searches for updates. But that's an easy problem to solve! This wikiHow article teaches you how to stop Steam from opening on startup on Windows 10, 11, and Mac computers.

Playing HDR content while running your laptop on battery can reduce battery life. Therefore, your PC manufacturer might have turned HDR off by default for when you're running on battery. You can change the default power setting if you want.

If HDR is turned on when your laptop is plugged in and then you unplug your laptop, HDR will be turned off to help save battery power. If you plug in your laptop again, HDR will be turned on again automatically.

Select Battery options, then select the Allow HDR games, videos, and apps on battery check box or the Allow streaming HDR video on battery check box.

If HDR was already turned on when your laptop is plugged in, HDR will now stay on if you unplug it and run on battery power.

On HDR-capable laptops, the default power settings will turn off HDR when running on battery power. This can cause undersaturated colors after restarting your PC. To avoid this, plug in your laptop before restarting it, or change the power settings to keep HDR on when running on battery.

On an HDR-capable laptop running on Windows 10 version 1809, the brightness level for the built-in display might change unexpectedly when battery saver is turned on. For example, one or more of the following things might occur:

If the built-in display becomes brighter when battery saver is turned on, lower the brightness setting manually in Settings > System > Display . After that, the screen should have the correct brightness level again. For more info about how to change the screen brightness, see Change screen brightness in Windows 10.

If the brightness level changes unexpectedly when your PC wakes from sleep, turn off battery saver to work around this problem. To change the battery saver setting, go to Settings > System > Battery , and then clear the Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below check box.

To work around this issue, while battery saver is turned on, change the brightness setting manually in Settings > System > Display . For more info about how to change the screen brightness, see Change screen brightness in Windows 10.

I've just recently built my own gaming pc and I was just wondering should I flip the ON/OFF switch on the Power supply off after I shut down my computer ? I've read some of the answers from Tom's Hardware forum but they don't seems to answer my question. Will leaving the Power supply flip switch on harm my PSU in anyway or the components in my pc or will switching it off every time I shut down my pc and switching it on when I wanted to switch on my pc do any current tripping or any harm to my PSU ? Thanks in advanced.

It won't affect anything but you should leave the switch on since there's no reason to turn it off. Also what are your PC specs? The PSU you have is pretty trash and should be replaced if you have a decent GPU.

When this Windows (10) setting is enabled: if you have the EA app still active and you turn off the PC, despite having the in-app setting turned off, the EA app will start again upon the next sign in.

When this Windows (10) setting is disabled: only the EA app in-app setting can influence this behaviour.

ORIGINAL STORY 30/7/18: Steam has come under fire in recent months for opening its store to hundreds of decidedly dodgy games, and it seems this policy is once again hurting customers, as one game on the Steam store is reportedly turning players' computers into a cryptocurrency-mining botnet.

The offending game in question is called Abstractism - an indie which masquerades as a "trivial platformer" but seems to be doing something far more insidious. Multiple players have left negative reviews with screenshots showing evidence the game installs a Trojan virus "disguised as as a steam.exe process" along with malware under the name "abstractism launcher". After seeing these reports, YouTuber SidAlpha investigated the game and found these viruses are likely installing cryptocurrency mining software. This presents a huge risk for players, as according to CSO, "cryptojacking" can damage computer performance, increase electricity bills, and even infect cloud infrastructure. 006ab0faaa
