Weisel House - 1853

Weisel House

1853

312 N 2nd Ave.

Andrew Weisel was born in Bavaria in 1822. He moved to St. Charles in June of 1846. Weisel married Isabella Beith, the sister of William Beith, in May of 1850.

Beith was one of the most prominent contractors in Kane County then. It is assumed that Weisel worked as a mason for Beith. Andrew Weisel built and designed this two-story Greek Revival cottage in 1853 after purchasing the land for fifty-five dollars. The house has a gable front with a wing that was added later on. It is constructed of red brick and has a river stone foundation. Weisel lived in the house until 1867, when he purchased a small farm west of the Fox River.

The owner of the Weisel House in the early 1980s, Glenn Craft, restored it and nominated it for the National Register of Historic Places. The Andrew Weisel House received its National Register listing on February 2, 1982. The Weisel House remains a rare example of a 1850s Greek Revival style house in St. Charles.
