PERSONALITY
"The Doctor", a title embodying their promise to the universe, was the main alias used by a mysterious traveller of both space and time, also known as Doctor Who (sometimes abbreviated Dr. Who) and a renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. The Doctor adventured with numerous companions in an obsolete and "borrowed" Type 40 TARDIS. The Doctor was "the universe's greatest defender", having saved the cosmos thousands of times across a long life, becoming a legend throughout the universe, and a complicated space-time event of unparalleled complexity.
Though largely a believer in non-violent conflict resolution, the Doctor was, when absolutely necessary, a great warrior. Indeed, some civilisations in the universe translated the word doctor as warrior, whilst others saw the Doctor as a compassionate benefactor, worthy of their admiration and compassion.Β
Although the Doctor had saved untold numbers on their travels, sometimes being known as "Life's Champion", even in darkness, the Doctor was thought to have caused the deaths of billions at the end of the Last Great Time War, as well as countless others before and after, when available options was limited and others was caught in the crossfire.Β
From the latter years of their first incarnation onward, the Doctor had a pronounced affinity for Earth and the human race. After departing Gallifrey, the Doctor voluntarily chose to spend time on Earth, choosing it as the place of their exile for most of their third incarnation, and even owning property in Kent, as well as London and New York City. The Doctor favoured Great Britain in particular, frequently returning, and finding many of their companions there. Later on, the Doctor thought of themselves as Earth's protector. Even before the disappearance of Gallifrey, the Doctor spent much more time on Earth than on their homeworld, as "home from home".Β
BIOGRAPHY
The Doctor was born on the home planet of the Time Lords, Gallifrey, "the oldest and most mighty race in the universe", on the Holiday of Otherstide. When asked by Organon what star sign he was born under, he said that he was born under the sign of Crossed Computers, the symbol of the Gallifreyan maternity service. The Doctor recalled having a family including a mother, a father, an uncle, sisters, and seven grandmothers. He had at least one brother, Irving Braxiatel. The Eighth Doctor claimed to Professor Wagg that his mother was human, which the Bruce Master also determined through analysis of the Doctor's retinal structure revealing the Doctor was half-human and half-Time Lord. The Eighth Doctor's memory of his mother's appearance resembled Penelope Gate, a human time traveller who had a child with the Time Lord Ulysses in the generation before the Doctor's. One of the many contradictory origins for the Doctor that Maris found was that the Doctor had been born to "a human mother" and a "Time Lord father" on Otherstide.Β
The Doctor himself remembered growing up with all the privilege that came with belonging to an "important", political family on Gallifrey, living in a "house that was perched halfway up the top of a mountain" in South Gallifrey. Known as the House of Lungbarrow, this house was one of the Ancient Oldblood Houses and overlooked the Cadonflood River. The Doctor grew up in Lungbarrow, either with his parents or his cousins, who would call him cruel names to reflect the fact that he was loomed with a belly button. As a result, the Doctor grew up a lonely and depressed youth.
When he was just a "small child", the Doctor's mother told him the story of Grandfather Paradox. It scared the Doctor so much that he worried that Grandfather Paradox was hiding in his wardrobe or under his bed. During his formative years, the Doctor was "brain-buffed" at his home by his Avatroid Tutor, Badger. During this time, the Doctor was forced to learn by rote and was taught about the Legacy of Rassilon and the story of Otherstide. The Doctor disliked this form of learning and often caused distractions and tried to escape his lessons. During this time, before joining the Academy, the Doctor would leave his house at night, going to sleep in a barn, despite attempts by his guardians to invite him back in to join "the other boys". During one of these nights, a hand grabbed his leg from under the bed and he was told he was dreaming and to return to the bed, where a female voice told him that "fear [was] a superpower", and that it could "make [him] kind". Afterwards, the Doctor heard a noise and sat up to find a toy soldier at the foot of the bed.Β
Like all Time Lords, the Doctor was taken from his family at the age of eight for the selection process. Staring into the Untempered Schism as part of a Time Lord initiation rite, he reacted by running away. The Doctor attended the Time Lord Academy as a member of the Prydonian Chapter in the Class of 92. He received tutelage from Borusa and Azmael. While the Doctor claimed that he spent "centuries" at the Academy, Maris also found evidence that his time at the Academy had only been twenty years. The Doctor had a room at the Academy, and would worry that he would be the first student at the Academy to fail after he failed at exams.
FOURTH DOCTOR
Filled with wanderlust and a renewed curiosity towards exploring time and space, the Fourth Doctor left all ties of his previous incarnation's exile behind on Earth, setting off to travel the universe, taking advantage of his freedom once more.
This incarnation of the Doctor was the first to meet Davros, creator of the Daleks; as well as Zygons, Krynoids, Magnus Greel, the Black Guardian, the White Guardian, and the renegade Time Lord known as Morbius.
This incarnation of the Doctor initially travelled with Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sullivan, but Harry chose to remain on Earth when the opportunity arose. The Doctor and Sarah continued on their adventures until the Doctor was summoned to Gallifrey, necessitating that he leave her behind as humans were not allowed on Gallifrey at the time.
After tangling with the Decayed Master on Gallifrey when he tried to heal himself and renew his regeneration cycle, he met and travelled with Leela of the Sevateem. During his travels with Leela, the Doctor gained a new companion in the robot dog, K9. Returning once more to Gallifrey to stop an invasion of Vardans, Leela and the original K9 stayed behind there.
On the White Guardian's orders, the Doctor began looking for the Key to Time with fellow Time Lady Romana and K9 Mark II. Once that search was concluded, the Doctor and Romana went on the run from the Black Guardian. Not long after, Romana regenerated into a new body and continued to travel with the Doctor and K9. When they attempted to answer a Gallifreyan summons, the trio accidentally passed into the smaller universe of E-Space.
During his travels in E-Space, the Doctor gained a new companion in the teenaged mathematical genius Adric. Romana and K9 stayed behind in E-Space as the Doctor and Adric departed for N-Space. There, they encountered a Trakenite named Nyssa and a human named Tegan. The foursome successfully prevented the destruction of the universe by the Tremas Master, but only at the cost of this incarnation's life.
The Doctor prepared for the worst when the Watcher, an entity born of his own immediate future, appeared to warn him of his demise. Due to the Master messing with the rotation controls for the Pharos radio telescope, the Doctor fell a great height. Suffering terrible injuries, he was assisted by the Watcher in his last moment, who joined with him and helped him regenerate into his next incarnation.
SIXTH DOCTOR
As loud in clothing as he was in voice, the Sixth Doctor would often browbeat others into submission with his savage wit and grammarian's interest in language. Passionate, warm and virtuous, he held a thunderous and turbulent exterior that initially manifested as righteous indignation or smug self-satisfaction, but, as he acquired a larger entourage of companions, he mellowed out of his faults and became a man of genuine zest and charm.
EIGHTH DOCTOR
Leading a life of great temporal complexity, the Eighth Doctor was so frequently involved in time paradoxes and parallel universes that it was impossible to know with certainty how the major epochs of his existence fitted together, complicated even further by his frequent bouts of amnesia and his claim of being half-human β though sources dispute if this was actually the case.
The Eighth Doctor was inherently a happy adventurer, falling in love with companions Grace Holloway and Charley Pollard, and was not averse to experiencing and appreciating very human emotions, from kissing Grace to providing psychological support for Izzy Sinclair. A playful man who wanted the universe to be a peaceful and beautiful place, even when met with disaster, he was not averse to cheekily giving people hints about their futures as he revelled in life and living, but his lifetime was equally defined by some of the nastiest circumstances possible, from him constantly being captured and tortured to witnessing many senseless deaths. In the later years of his life, he turned colder and angrier and less willing to take on companions when it became clear that a terrible tragedy was brewing in the universe. He would be present for the first portion of the Time War before regenerating into the War Doctor.
