PERSONALITY

Romana was exceptionally clever (even on par with the Doctor) and strong-willed. She shared many personality traits with the Doctor. She was capable of killing when necessary, though she didn't like it - when she shot one of the guards on Zanak, she instantly regretted it. She could also be manipulative when necessary.

In her first incarnation, before leaving Gallifrey, Romana was sophisticated, spoilt, overconfident and naïve. She was haughty and "by the book" and occasionally annoyed by the Doctor's eccentricities. She was exceptionally bright, very good at puzzles, and considered to be one of the greatest minds on Gallifrey, making her a favourite of her tutors at the Academy, but she lacked experience outside of academia. She was able to properly and smoothly land the TARDIS simply by reading the Instruction Manual. Her demeanour led to her being nicknamed "the Icemaiden" by her peers, who were jealous of her abilities. 

In her second incarnation, Romana was more bubbly, free-spirited, and witty, a female version of the Fourth Doctor. Narvin listed Romana's virtues as "compassion, intuition, emotion, honesty, integrity, pragmatism and extreme competence". Due to her new lifestyle of exploration and adventure, Romana dreaded the thought of spending the rest of her life on Gallifrey, finding that her life aboard the TARDIS was one full of "thrills and spills". Upon returning from E-Space, however, she returned to her homeworld and endeavoured to liberalise Time Lord society during her presidency, frustrated with the monopolistic and isolationist policies of Gallifrey. Her subjects saw her as a radical but she herself did not think so, simply believing that power gave her the responsibility to do what was right. She was willing to sacrifice her position for the planet's safety, but made herself Coordinator of the CIA so that she might still steer the Time Lords in what she saw as the right direction. She was also willing to regenerate in order to become President once more and lead the planet during the Last Great Time War. He also found her fun when she was being bossy and, as a result, was uncertain if he liked it or not when she agreed with him. She inspired loyalty from Braxiatel, Leela and Narvin and, despite her controversial policies, was broadly popular. 

During the early days of the Last Great Time War, Romana sought diplomatic means to end the conflict with the Daleks,  intending to fight the war in her own way. When such measures failed, she still believed that the war could be won without using Dalek-like methods. The actions of Gallifrey under President Rassilon led her to believe that the planet was not the world that she had fought for and that it was no longer her home. 

BIOGRAPHY

Romanadvoratrelundar — known in short as Romana — was a Time Lord who was assigned the task to assist the Fourth Doctor in his quest for the Key to Time. She stayed with him long after that task was done and parted from him in E-Space. When she returned to N-Space, she became the Lady President of the Time Lords of Gallifrey.

ROMANA I

Romana was born in the House of Heartshaven on Gallifrey as an only child. As a Time Tot, she had a copy of the Gallifreyan nursery book Our Planet Story. Her second incarnation would later claim that her family were, in Earth terms, "bohemians". Her mother and father told her that she would be left in the Drylands if she misbehaved and her father very rarely approved of her. According to one account, she was raised by robots. 

Romana ran away when she looked into the Untempered Schism at the age of eight. In her sixties, she and her family spent summers at Lake Abydos where she would swim and gather zinc hawthorns from the molten rushes at the water's edge.

During her time at the Time Lord Academy, Romana recited an oath as she became a Time Lady to master her emotions. When she was sixty years old, she would swim in Lake Abydos, home of the singing fish. She gathered zinc hawthorns from the molten rushes at the water's edge with her friends Taris and Rorvan, an orphaned brother and sister. However, when the Celestial Intervention Agency erased their timelines, Romana was unable to remember her friends and remembered herself as being lonely as a child. 

For her seventieth birthday, she was given an air car. Romana was taught by Irving Braxiatel at the Academy. She excelled at reason, caution and quiet calculation during her training and came top in her class in geophysics but hated her time there. Her classmates were jealous of her effortless academic superiority, nicknaming her "the Ice Maiden". While there, she was contacted by the spirit of Pandora, who told her she had manipulated Romana's genetic make-up through the centuries with the Imperiatrix Imprimatur to create the perfect vessel for her to rule Gallifrey again.

Romana told Braxiatel, who hypnotised her to forget not only Pandora, but also him. She recalled only having heard of him through his art collection before her return to Gallifrey from her travels.

Romana considered Sartia to be her best friend at the Academy but Sartia secretly hated her as she considered her to be an overachiever and a tutor's pet. 

Romana was working at the Bureau of Ancient Records when the White Guardian assigned her to assist the Fourth Doctor in the quest for the Key to Time, appearing to her as the Lord President of Gallifrey. Though she was much younger than the Doctor, she considered him an academic inferior because of his final grades. The Doctor was initially unwilling to take Romana along and was somewhat hostile to her as he believed he did not need her help.

Romana eventually regenerates into her second Incarnation.

ROMANA II

In order to purge the malicious influence of Pandora, which had begun to resurface after her ordeal with the Shadow, Romana voluntarily chose to regenerate into her second incarnation, continuing on her travels with the Fourth Doctor. 

Eventually, Romana leaves the TARDIS, choosing to remain with K-9 in E-Space where they could help release the Tharils from captivity. They eventually return to N-Space, making their way to Gallifrey where Romana later becomes President of Gallifrey. She was at this time generally referred to by her full name and had Leela, K9 and Irving Braxiatel as her closest confidantes. 

Romana presided over Gallifrey in an ever-changing political situation where new time-active powers like the Monan Host were coming to prominence. The machinations of the Free Time terrorist group and a civil war against the malevolent Pandora (who took on the form of Romana's first incarnation) would eventually see Gallifrey fall into ruin and Romana lose her position to Matthias. Braxiatel tried to salvage the situation, but this went "pear-shaped", leaving Gallifrey overrun by Dogma Virus zombies and about to be hit with temporal weapons. Romana, however, had a plan: explore alternate universes to find a new Gallifrey to live on. Finally, Romana, Leela, and Narvin settled on a version of Gallifrey in which time travel was just beginning to be realised. Romana assumed the Presidency after the assassination of her alternate universe counterpart and appointed Narvin her chancellor. 

Romana discovered a signal coming through time from the Axis, which she thought could be a way back to their home. When a portal from this signal opened in the Panopticon, she was greeted by Daleks. Romana managed to prevent the Daleks' plan to invade the multiverse, and managed to return home to her own Gallifrey, complete with a cure to the Dogma virus. Shortly after arriving on her own Gallifrey, Romana repelled a Dalek invasion of Gallifrey with her future incarnation by trapping them in the Matrix. She then set about rebuilding her Gallifrey, which was still crippled by disease and war.

In the timeline created by Irving Braxiatel averting her second regeneration aboard the Moros, Romana resigned as President and became Coordinator of the Celestial Intervention Agency, which she was still serving as at the outbreak of the Last Great Time War. The Tenth Doctor recalled that "things went well for Romana... until the Time War." Romana was exiled along with Narvin after a failed attempt to assassinate Lord President Eternal Rassilon. She became caught up in the Dalek Emperor’s plot to seize Gallifrey by null space technology, after which Rassilon exiled her to a pocket dimension filled with Gallifrey’s archives to serve as an archivist.

ROMANA IV

This is a Romana who has lost everything; her friends, family, and her own home. First, at the hands of Rassilon, and then the Time War, until finally...to the Master. 

However, she managed to survive, escaping the chaos. Despite it, this incarnation of Romana's deals with Survivor's guilt and much trauma. She tends to keep to herself, but also desperalty longs for connection and to gain back what was lost.
