This was initially achieved in 2020, but was theorized much earlier and was planned for the Orion project in the late 50s and early 60s. As suggested by the name, this engine is based on fusion. To travel to Alpha Centauri (4.73 ly), a spaceship will require approximately 300,000 1 megaton Hydrogen bombs that will be blasted behind the spacecraft one by one. With this method we can achieve 10% of the speed of light in a month. However, since half of the fuel will be used to slow down and stop at the destination, resulting in a significant reduction of speed, the trip would take about 90 years.
However, our team of scientists theorized three new, more efficient engines. One of those engines is today used in all of our spacecrafts.
