Shrub density measurements give an indication of the height and density of low to mid-level plants in the ecosystem.
Shrubs provide protection from predators and food for small birds, macroinvertebrates and ground dwelling mammals and reptiles.
To calculate shrub density at Longneck Lagoon you will need to use a shrub density board which has numbered stripes between 1 and 6. These stripes allow you to determine the height and density of the shrub layers.
Person 1 holds the shrub density board in front of them and person 2 either – walks 10 metres in a random direction away from person 1 OR uses diagonal corners of a 10 metre quadrat.
Person 2 looks at the board and reads out the numbers they can clearly see.
