Salinity

Salinity parameter video transcript

Salts and minerals are found in our soils, however, excessive salt levels can negatively impact water quality.

Average freshwater readings are 150ppm. Above 350ppm is considered brackish and above 1900ppm significantly inhibits the growth of many organisms. The salt enters waterways by rising ground water and runoff.

To measure the salinity of the water at Longneck Lagoon EEC, you will use the TDS meter from the grey kit. TDS stands for total dissolved solids with the most common solid being salt.

Turn the TDS meter on and wait for it to read zero.

Place the TDS meter into the water, you only need to immerse the electrodes.

Press the hold button while the TDS is in the water then remove it from the water.

The salinity reading will be displayed in parts per million (ppm).

Turn the TDS meter off and return to the grey kit.
