"Empowering Minds: Nurturing Self-Reliant Learners for a Brighter Tomorrow"
Dear Students,
In an age defined by rapid change and global transformation, the greatest gift you can give yourselves is the ability to learn independently. As your teachers and mentors, our role extends beyond delivering lessons; it is our mission to help you cultivate the strength to become self-reliant learners—individuals who are not only knowledgeable but also curious, reflective and driven by a sense of purpose. A self-reliant learner is someone who takes the initiative, embrace challenges and remains undeterred by setbacks. Such a learner does not wait to be told what to do but actively seeks knowledge, asks thoughtful questions and takes responsibility for personal growth. This trait, when nurtured, becomes the foundation for a lifetime of success not just academically, but in every sphere of life.
The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 lays significant emphasis on this very vision. It seeks to transform education in India by shifting the focus from rote learning to conceptual understanding, from passive reception to active engagement and from teacher-centered instruction to learner-centered exploration. At its core, NEP 2020 aspires to produce self-directed individuals capable of adapting, innovating and contributing meaningfully to society. In line with this vision, our classrooms are evolving into spaces where exploration, collaboration and inquiry are at the heart of learning. You are now encouraged to choose your subjects, engage in multidisciplinary studies, participate in hands-on projects and take charge of your learning journey. This flexibility is not just an academic privilege, but it is an invitation to discover who you are and what you are capable of achieving. However, self-reliance in learning does not mean isolation. It means developing the ability to learn beyond instructions, to reflect on your progress and to seek solutions independently when challenges arise.
We, your teachers, are always here to guide and support you, but the true engine of your growth must be your own inner motivation.
Here are a few ways you can begin this journey toward self-reliant learning:
· Set Clear Goals: Know where you want to go and make a plan to get there.
· Stay Curious: Ask questions. Dive deeper. Don’t settle for surface-level understanding.
· Manage Your Time: Prioritize tasks and balance your responsibilities with discipline.
· Reflect Regularly: Make time to think about what you’ve learned and how you’ve learned it.
· Utilize Resources: Make use of books, digital tools, mentors and peers to broaden your perspective.
As NEP 2020 rightly emphasizes, education must prepare students not only for exams, but for life. In becoming a self-reliant learner, you are developing the very skills that will help you thrive in unpredictable future skills such as adaptability, critical thinking, creativity and resilience.
Let this be the generation that learns not just with the mind, but with purpose. Let your education not just prepare you for jobs, but for leadership. In becoming self-reliant learners, you become architects of your own future and contributors to a more enlightened, capable and self-reliant India.
With encouragement and faith in your potential,
Warm Regards,
Shurti Arya, PRT English
"The most powerful education is the one that teaches you to teach yourself where curiosity is your compass and growth, your constant pursuit."
Dear Learners, Parents and Educators,
In today’s rapidly evolving world, where change is the only constant, the ability to learn, unlearn, and relearn is emerging as the most valuable asset for the future. At Salwan Public School, our aim is to nurture self-reliant learners who possess not only intellectual capability but also emotional strength, moral clarity and an unquenchable curiosity to explore the world around them.
Education, as W.B. Yeats so profoundly expressed, is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire. This fire must be one of independent thought, reflective inquiry and a deep sense of purpose. We believe that every child holds within them a spark waiting to be kindled, a desire to know, to grow and to contribute meaningfully to their surroundings. Our role as educators is not to impose knowledge but to guide, encourage and walk alongside our learners as they discover their unique paths.
This vision beautifully resonated through the Holiday Homework assigned across various grades, which was thoughtfully curated to balance joy and purpose, academic rigor and life skill development. From Montessori-II to Class XI, the activities were crafted to foster creativity, self-reliance, curiosity and value-based learning. While the youngest learners explored letters, numbers and shapes through playful tasks, older students engaged in interdisciplinary projects, sustainability campaigns, cultural explorations and reflective journaling.
Across all levels, the homework encouraged independent thinking, environmental consciousness, digital literacy and emotional well-being, ensuring that learning continued beyond the classroom in a meaningful and engaging manner. Parental involvement and assessment tools added depth to the process, offering insights into children’s experiences and supporting their holistic development. This commitment to integral education also found expression in our recent celebrations of International Yoga Day and World Environment Day. These were not just events but meaningful experiences that reaffirmed the values we seek to instil: balance, awareness, respect and responsibility.
Yoga Day reminded us of the timeless wisdom in our ancient traditions. By incorporating yoga into daily life, we promote not just physical health but mental clarity, emotional resilience and mindfulness. Rooted in the Panchakosha philosophy, this practice nurtures every layer of a child’s being: physical (Annamaya), energetic (Pranamaya), emotional (Manomaya), intellectual (Vijnanamaya) and spiritual (Anandamaya) making education a journey of transformation rather than mere instruction. Similarly, World Environment Day offered our students a platform to connect deeply with nature through tree planting drives, sustainability initiatives and creative projects. These engagements fostered a sense of stewardship for the planet and inspired students to become environmentally responsible citizens committed to protecting and nurturing life.
Through every such initiative, whether a classroom activity, a co-curricular project, or a reflective assignment, we reinforce our belief in holistic education. We strive to offer every learner’s opportunity to express through art, lead with empathy, explore with curiosity and grow in character, confidence and compassion.
As we move forward, let us remember that self-reliance is not isolation. A truly self-reliant learner is in tune with their own strengths and limitations, someone who knows when to seek guidance and when to forge ahead independently. Our responsibility as mentors is to support without overshadowing, guide without dictating and step back when our learners are ready to soar.
To all our students, I say this: Be brave enough to wonder, disciplined enough to follow through, wise enough to reflect, and humble enough to grow. The future belongs to those who take charge of their learning journey, who embrace challenges and who shape the world with courage, compassion and clarity.
Let us raise a generation that does not merely dream of a better world, but dares to build one.
With unwavering faith in your potential,
Blessings,
Rashmi Malik
