Hello, my name is Spencer Price. I am a current senior at the STEM Early College at NCA&T. As a student of the early college, I was given the opportunity to participate in a senior internship. Through this internship opportunity, I got to work on a team with fellow students alongside Dr. Dominic P. Clemence on a project modeling capacitor charge and discharge through the Conformable Fractional Derivative. The purpose of this was to test the efficacy of the Conformable Fractional Derivative definition, as past definitions have shortcomings when it comes to adhering to the traditional rules of integer-order derivatives, such as the chain rule. Additionally, compared to the past definitions, the ease of using the Conformable Fractional Derivative definition is higher due to its relative simplicity compared to its predecessors.
“Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all.”
-Aristotle
This quote encapsulates a lot of the reasons that I find service-learning to be an important aspect of education. While learning new knowledge through classes is important, it means nothing if there is no meaningful and lasting application of said knowledge. Service-learning acts as a method for students to educate the heart in the way that Aristotle described by allowing them to directly serve the community.
