Math 42B1 Intro to Analysis Spring 2025 UCSD

Class Information

Textbook: Elementary Analysis (Second Edition) by K. Ross. We will cover chapters 4-6 (except the starred parts). The textbook is available for free in pdf format from the UCSD library.

TAs: Gregory Patchell, Tongtong Liang.

Homework: HW is due at 11:59PM on Gradescope on the said day. No late homework will be accepted. On each assignment, a few problems will be graded for correctness, while the others will be graded simply for completion. 

Homework 1 (Due Friday April. 11): Chapter 23: 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. Chapter 24: 1, 2, 9, 10 ,17.

Homework 2 (Due Friday April. 25): Chapter 25: 4, 5, 6, 7. Chapter 26: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6.

Homework 3 (Due Friday May. 9): Chapter 28: 2, 7, 8, 11, 15. Chapter 29: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 13, 14, 18. 

Homework 4 (Due Friday May. 23): Chapter 31: 1, 2, 4, 5. Chapter 32: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8.

Homework 5 (Due Friday June 6): Chapter 33: 1 through 15. 

• First Midterm: April 21 in class. 

• Second Midterm: May 14 in class.

• Final Exam: 

Grading: Your final grade will be the maximum of the following two weighted averages:

• 20% Homework, 20% First Midterm, 20% Second Midterm, 40% Final Exam.

• 20% Homework, 20% Best Midterm, 60% Final Exam

Special Accommodations: Students requiring accommodations should provide an OSD letter of certification and OSD accommodation recommendation to the instructor as soon as possible.
