How To Make a Wharf Hydrant - LDH (Forward Hose Lay)

  1. Command “Make the Hydrant” is given by the Officer

  1. Firefighter leaves riding position and goes to engineers’ compartment

  1. Removes 3” or 2 ½” bypass hose

c. Roll out bypass line for distance, with female end to hydrant

d. Firefighter goes to tailboard

e. Fastening device for appliance is removed

  1. Remove Oasis valve from engine

  1. Place one arm through hydrant strap

  1. Remove appliance with both hands and carry to male end of bypass line

  1. Place on ground

  1. Anchor hose line

  1. Grasp LDH from outside with hands, drop hose if it hangs up while laying

  1. Signal engine to “take off”

  1. Verbally and visually signal by shouting “take off” with a forward hand movement

  1. Stand clear of hose in case of hang up with supply hose

  1. Remove fitting bag from LDH

  1. Obtain necessary fitting and appropriate wrench

  1. Connect 2 ½” x 4 ½” increaser to bypass hose male end

  1. Connect appliance to increaser

  1. Inlet of appliance with swivel

  1. Remove kinks or folds in hose back to hydrant

  1. Remove cap from hydrant

  1. Using appropriate wrench

  1. Place cap on ground

  1. Place wrench on stem

  1. Connect female end of bypass hose to hydrant

12. Receive signal for water

  1. Verbally from engine

  1. Verbally by radio

  1. Visually if you can see the clamp in place

13. Charge hydrant

a. Slowly all the way on then back ¼ turn

14. Remove kinks at hydrant

a. Using hose strap on hose

15. Follow supply line to engine

a. Remove kinks

b. Consider access
