The problem is monotonous work days which can lead to burnout. Just today, I had two separate conversations about how it is a slow week. On a Tuesday, I was told that it felt like it should be a Thursday or Friday. Boring and redundant days seem to be a constant conversation topic. There seem to be several factors that contribute to monotonous work days.
Initial state:Â An environment that plays a role in the monotony of work.
Who has the problem?
People in the workforce with a similar day-to-day schedule or a constant workspace may face this problem. With work from home being more common, many are stuck at their desks. The design will be used at people’s office setups, likely work-from-home setups that consist of a desk in a room.
What are the side effects to be avoided?
Side effects to be avoided are having the space be a place in which people do not care to occupy beyond the work day. People should still desire to get out of their seats and work in different areas if they have the opportunity to do so.
Limited Admissible Actions
Work Constraints Given fixed schedules and unalterable responsibilities, changing work setups may not be feasible. Existing arrangements pose constraints on potential alterations.
Introducing a cushion for office chairs to combat sedentary behavior. It has a sensor activating a 35-minute timer, reminding users to stand and move through haptics and speakers. Primarily for at-home offices, it's useful with management encouragement for office workers. Addresses remote work challenges by promoting movement every 35 minutes. The cushion considers nudging and ergonomics for a more active workday. Next, we'll discuss the future of this innovative solution.
The future state of the cushion will be paired with an app that will surface data to the user. The app will take into consideration the eight recommended design strategies for persuasive technologies discussed in this paper
Dynamic Goal Tracking
Real-time display of collected data motivates users toward wellness goals.
User-Controlled Privacy
Choose when to view data—entering the app or opting in for notifications.
Team Collaboration Options
Share wellness data with team members for collaborative encouragement.
Historical Data on Dashboard
Detailed historical data provides insights into past behavior.
Research is clear in showing the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. As our jobs become less and less physically demanding, we need all the help we can get to be as active as possible during the workday. With technology, nudging, and ergonomics in mind, The Smart Cushion, will help office workers promote consistent periodic breaks throughout the day and therefore encourage a healthier lifestyle.
