Kicked out of Stanford in 2003, framed for stealing test answers by his roommate, Bryce Larkin, Chuck’s life completely stalled. Working at the Burbank Buy More, his sole achievement was supervising the Nerd Herd, a scraggly team of computer technicians. However, on his 26th birthday, Chuck received an email from Bryce and, thinking that it contained birthday wishes and an attempt at reconciliation, he opened it… and inadvertently downloaded all the government’s secrets into his head, later learning that Bryce, an agent with the CIA, had stolen those secrets from a joint CIA/NSA facility. With “Flashes” of this intel at the ready inside his mind, ordinary Chuck Bartowski became the Intersect - the government’s most valuable asset.
Taking on the alias of “Charles Carmichael” and falling in love with Sarah, his beautiful handler, Chuck’s life turned into a mad adventure of spies and world saving, all while keeping his spy life secret from his friends and family - to varying degrees of success.
Chuck is a sweet, gentle soul, with far more of a sense of humor than a sense of self worth.
The world has repeatedly beaten him down. First, his parents both left during his childhood in the span of five years, leaving him his older sister's ward and feeling (unduly) responsible for his parents leaving and guilty for being a burden on Ellie. Then, getting kicked out of university over false accusations and resultingly losing both his future and his girlfriend (Jill, who was emotionally abusive), he was left feeling like any potential he'd ever might have had was now gone. In a way, he resists moving forward with his life out of a fear it will all get stolen away from him again.
He's incredibly protective of his family and friends, from the very start, and more motivated to protect them than he is to protect himself. When he gets the second version of the Intersect, which includes skill Flashes, he more often Flashes to protect someone else than himself. Chuck is adamantly against using lethal force, even when thrown into situations where his teammates would without question. The only situation in which he ever would take a life would be to protect someone he loves. He's initially very disturbed by the violence both in his Flashes and that which he witnesses his handlers commit, although he comes to understand and accept this over the course of the series.
Despite resisting it for some time, the Intersect and the responsibility that comes with it help Chuck to reconnect with his inner strength and come to respect himself again... or perhaps for the first time.
