When I found out that I got accepted in November as a page, I was beyond excited! I applied just for fun, not knowing how fun it actually was! I was fortunate enough to intern with some of the most comedic and intelligent people I’ve ever met, and I will try my best to tell you about my week. What I will say is that you just had to be there.
During the week of February 27th, I would start the day by dropping off my sister at school and then begin my hour-long commute to Annapolis. Going down the congested Route 32 to I-97 and then exiting to turn into Gate 6. Now was the easy part, getting ready and briskly walking over to the shuttle that took me each day to the State House. After that, I usually just walked around the city for a bit, taking in the beautiful colonial architecture with red brick paving the way through the different streets and alleys that led me to warm coffees at the local Starbucks. Each day was always something different. From short 30-minute sessions to debating about how HOV permits for electric cars correlate with human slavery, it was an eventful week.
As pages, we delivered hot coffee, tea, water, or bills to the delegates as the session continued. Walking up and down the aisles during session and post-session felt powerful. My small role was pivotal enough to assist and experience history. Later that week, I met Wes Moore for the third time after stalking him with my friends during my first week and shook his hand for the second time. I couldn’t stop laughing when one of them asked if he used shampoo or face wash for his head. Turns out, he uses a combination of both.
I networked with my delegates and hung out with everyone outside the assembly. We went to different restaurants, explored, and ended the week with an escape room. To this day, I’m still thinking about how rowdy and funny everyone was. We each had our opportunity to shine. But some of my favorite highlights were when we got invited to the Soda Convention and when one of my friends asked a delegate to reveal their Rice Purity score. But if I could do this again, I WOULD 1000% do it! I encourage every upcoming Senior to apply to this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that allows you to meet students, politicians, and Wes Moore! Gaining insight into state government operations might influence me to run one day, repping DISTRICT 14!!
P.S. The House Pages are superior!
