I am trying to recreate a painted image in illustrator. The painted image was airbrushed. I am try to recreate this image as a vector. Huge project, which I regret taking on, but I am in it now and need to create some strokes or highlights on the image with a spray can or airbrush. I am unable to find any suitable brushes and the defaults that came with Illustrator have no spray or airbrush like brushes.

The basic issue is that 1-bit raster imaging has been largely neglected since the earlier days of computer graphics, especially in primarily vector-based drawing programs. (Thus my suggestion that Illustrator's Rasterize command would be much improved by simply including a diffusion dither option.) You can see in this thread all the convoluted routines involving "higher end" features just to simulate what one could do in the 80s with, for another example, a mere swipe of the Airbrush Tool in Silicon Graphics SuperPaint, which directly did exactly what is needed here: it simply sprayed a very low-tech 1-bit diffusion dither on SuperPaint's raster layer.

I have a few characters and lines that I stylised by adding the spray paint effect (Effect->Effect Gallery->Brush Strokes->Sprayed Stroke). However, after adding the effect I noticed that it added a distinct white background of sorts to each individual character (photo attached), while I'd like it to be transparent (to match the grey behind the characters). Any idea how I can fix this? Thanks!

I've been trying to replicate a spray paint text effect in photoshop with hardly any luck. I downloaded multiple spray paint brushes/assets, the problem, however, is whenever you resize the brush to make it small enough to fit the text, the spray paint noise detail get lost and it looks like a regular soft brush.

Change the stroke's weight, or line width, to alter the airbrush appearance. Increasing the weight, or giving it a greater width, creates the effect of the imaginary spray tool moving closer to the canvas, while reducing the weight makes it simulate the effect of a spray tool moved farther from the canvas.

Change the feather radius to alter the amount of paint used. Increasing the radius mimics less paint, while decreasing the radius creates the appearance of more paint being sprayed in a concentrated stream.

Create strokes that resemble those drawn with the angled point of a calligraphic pen and are drawn along the center of the path. When you use the Blob Brush tool, you can paint with a calligraphic brush and automatically expand the brush stroke into a fill shape that merges with other filled objects of the same color that intersect or are adjacent in stacking order.

Thecolors that a scatter, art, or pattern brush paints depend on thecurrent stroke color and the colorization method of the brush. Toset the colorization method, select one of the following optionsin the Brush Options dialog box:

Select brushes from a predefined library or create your ownbrushes from the provided tip shapes such as round, flat, or fan.You can also set other brush characteristics such as bristle length, stiffness, and paint opacity.

Bristle brush strokes are made up of several overlapping, filled transparent paths. These paths, like any other filled pathin Illustrator, interact with the paint of other objects, includingother bristle bush paths. However, the fill for strokes does not self-interact.Therefore, layered, individual, bristle brush strokes build up andinteract with each other, but a single stoke scrubbed back and forthin place does not interact with itself and build up.

This option lets you set the opacity of the paint being used. Thepaint opacity can vary between 1% (Translucent) and 100% (opaque). The specified opacity value is the maximum opacity used in the brush. You can use the numeric keys[0-9] as shortcut to set the opacityof bristle brush strokes where:
