The Multistakeholder pledge: Sport for Inclusion and Protection will contribute to better lives for refugees and the communities that host them through leveraging the full breadth of opportunities that the Sport eco-system and sport and play based programming can provide. This includes using the platform of sport to create a positive narrative, ensuring enabling environments exist that contribute to equal access to sports activities in all their forms, generating new opportunities for learning, skills development and livelihoods and increasing the protection space for refugees and the communities that host them.

The Multistakeholder Pledge on Sport for Inclusion and Protection offers an opportunity for entities that are already or are interested in working with and through sport to come together and pledge concrete commitments to support refugees and host communities.

Together, we pledge to mobilize resources, expertise and networks to promote access to, and opportunities through sport for, and with, displaced people and host communities, contributing to more inclusive and cohesive societies.

It explores the role sport can play in the lives of refugees, and identifies five areas where action can be taken through sport to contribute to the protection and inclusion of displaced people and host communities. By pledging, organizations commit to delivering a specific output in one or more of the five commitment areas:

Sport can improve outcomes across many areas of work, including protection, health, education and solutions. This pledge is therefore engaged and working with other pledge initiatives to identify and explore synergies. The role of sport in enhancing benefits across other thematic areas will be a key focus at the GRF.

A group of delegates from ACSM, the American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine recently met to write updated guidelines on the care and treatment of select musculoskeletal injuries as part of the annual Team Physician Consensus Conference (TPCC). 


The TPCC Executive Committee, consisting of ACSM Fellows Stan Herring, M.D.; Ben Kibler, M.D.; and Margot Putukian, M.D., along with delegates from the partner organizations, reviewed the current scientific literature and clinical evidence to write the new evidence-based statement for clinicians. The resulting document, which will be published in 2022, will provide guidance and serve as a teaching tool for physicians, residents and fellows working in the sports medicine field.

The mission of the National Center for Catastrophic Sport Injury Research (NCCSIR) is to conduct surveillance of catastrophic injuries and illnesses related to participation in organized sports in the United States at the collegiate, high school, and youth levels of play. In working through a Consortium for Catastrophic Injury Monitoring, the NCCSIR aims to track cases through a systematic data reporting system that allows for longitudinal investigation of athletes suffering from catastrophic injuries and illnesses. The goal of the Center is to improve the prevention, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of catastrophic sports-related injuries.

This month's Lead Editorial by Jason Zaremski and colleagues poses the question of whether there should be an update of current pitching restriction policies in the sport of adolescent and high-school baseball.

A total of 834 athletes with a sports-related concussion were evaluated, 778 of whom had sustained a single concussion. The authors found that personal migraine history, a family history of migraines, and family history of psychiatric disorders were associated with sustaining a repeat concussion. However, time to resolution of symptoms, return-to-learn and return-to-play were similar between groups. For those with repeat concussions, initial symptom score was found to be higher after the second concussion, although amnesia was more common after the initial concussion.

Our Case Report this month highlights the difficult decisions which must be made before an athlete with a brain lesion may be returned to competitive contact sport. Brauge and colleagues describe the case of a rugby player with a cerebral vascular malformation (intracerebral cavernoma) who had sustained an episode of bleeding and had had a surgical excision of the lesion. This player was able to return to sport post-surgery, being selected for National duty, despite the development of lesional epilepsy which was well-controlled with monotherapy.

Sport clubs give students the chance to play in non-varsity sports while developing skills in administration, organization, and fundraising. Clubs may be instructional, recreational, competitive, or a combination thereof. Each club is overseen and advised by the University Recreation department, but are student led and managed. Some clubs compete with other universities or colleges but are not regulated by the NCAA.

Most sport clubs at UR have a full slate of officers (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer), making the sport club program an excellent venue for student leadership opportunities. In addition, University Recreation staff support the administrative efforts of the clubs. 9af72c28ce
