A FREE six-week Seminar in Culture and Communication specifically for existing or new graduate and professional international students runs every semester. In this seminar, students will gain a deeper understanding of US culture while improving spoken English skills.

During this seminar, students will participate in thoughtful discussions and authentic situations with instructors and campus guests for confidently communicating in English. Seminar enrollment will be kept small enough for ample time to practice spoken English.

The American Community Survey (ACS) 2009-2013 multi-year data are used to list all languages spoken in the United States that were reported during the sample period. These tables provide detailed counts of many more languages than the 39 languages and language groups that are published annually as a part of the routine ACS data release. This is the second tabulation beyond 39 languages since ACS began.

The tables include all languages that were reported in each geography during the 2009 to 2013 sampling period. For the purpose of tabulation, reported languages are classified in one of 380 possible languages or language groups. Because the data are a sample of the total population, there may be languages spoken that are not reported, either because the ACS did not sample the households where those languages are spoken, or because the person filling out the survey did not report the language or reported another language instead.

Purpose Early intervention using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) supports both receptive and expressive language skills. However, many parents and clinicians still worry that augmented language intervention might delay or impair speech development. This study aimed to (a) characterize and analyze the speech sound development of toddlers with developmental delay who participated in a parent-implemented language intervention; (b) examine the accuracy of speech sounds among toddlers who participated in an augmented language intervention using speech-generating devices and toddlers who participated in a traditional, spoken language intervention; and (c) examine the relationship between baseline factors (i.e., receptive and expressive language skills, vocal imitation, and number of unintelligible utterances) and the number of spoken target vocabulary words after intervention. Method This study used extant data from two randomized control trials of parent-implemented language interventions using AAC or spoken language. Out of 109 children who completed the intervention, 45 children produced spoken target vocabulary words at the end of the intervention. We identified and phonetically transcribed spoken target vocabulary words for each child and then classified them based on Shriberg and Kwiatkowski's (1982) developmental sound classes. Results Children's speech sound accuracy was not significantly different across intervention groups. Overall, children who produced more words had more speech sound errors and higher baseline language scores. Intervention group and baseline receptive and expressive language skills significantly predicted the number of spoken target vocabulary words produced at the end of intervention. Conclusions Participation in AAC intervention resulted in significantly more spoken target vocabulary words and no statistically significant differences in speech sound errors when compared to children who received spoken language intervention without AAC. Results support using AAC interventions for very young children without the fear that it will delay speech or spoken language development. Supplemental Material

When you highlight a piece of text that begins with a certain "intro," The speed of the spoken content dramatically slows down. For example, at least on my end, when a highlighted piece of text begins with a parenthesis "(" or ")" the highlighted content will be read out loud very slowly no matter your adjusted speaking rate. The "intro" that triggers this slow down is different depending on the voice you choose. For example, Siri vs Samantha. This slow down issue seems to be a lot more prevalent with Samantha. (Notably, it's possible that there are other causes/triggers besides particular "intros" to the highlighted text. This is just what I've personally identified through daily use).

I've noticed the same behavior in Sonoma. There is a significant amount of delay before the selected text is spoken. In earlier MacOS releases there was almost no lag between pressing the key combination and the selected text being spoken out loud.

I've also noticed in Sonoma that the content highlighting lags significantly behind the current word being spoken. On my MacBook the highlighting start several seconds after the system begins speaking, so the highlight is never on the correct word. I've also noticed that the content highlighting will often skip over multiple words entirely.

I'm having this same issue with spoken content lag in the Sonoma update. I was eager to see improvements with accessibility features in Sonoma, so this setback is disappointing. It significantly impacts productivity.

Yup. I saw the lag for the first time today. Boo Hiss. After a few minutes of frustration I transferred the document to my iPad. Spoken text works great on my iPad. It's not a fix. It isn't even a true workaround. But it does solve the problem. Until MACOS14.2 comes out, I will do all my spoken content on my iPad. I'll bet you can also do it on your iPhone.

The fourth iteration of the annual report explores the ways spoken word media consumption in the U.S. has increased over time, including the number of listeners, and how long they listen. The Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English is based on a large body of recordings of naturally occurring spoken interaction from all over the United States. The Santa Barbara Corpus represents a wide variety of people of different regional origins, ages, occupations, genders, and ethnic and social backgrounds. The predominant form of language use represented is face-to-face conversation, but the corpus also documents many other ways that that people use language in their everyday lives: telephone conversations, card games, food preparation, on-the-job talk, classroom lectures, sermons, story-telling, town hall meetings, tour-guide spiels, and more.

The Santa Barbara Corpus of Spoken American English also forms part of the International Corpus of English (ICE). The Santa Barbara Corpus provides the main source of data for the spontaneous spoken portions of the American component of the International Corpus of English. In order to meet the specific design specifications of the International Corpus of English (allowing comparison between American and other national varieties of English), the Santa Barbara Corpus data have been supplemented by additional materials in certain genres (e.g. read speech), filling out the American component of ICE. 006ab0faaa
