Gospel of John
Author: “The disciple whom Jesus loved” - the apostle John (John 21:20-24)
Purpose: (John 20:30-31)
The number seven - look for the following and list them:
List Jesus’ seven miraculous signs that John describes throughout the book.
“I am” - Seven times Jesus says, “I am the…” List them.
“I am” - Seven other times Jesus uses the phrase “I am” by itself to identify himself. List them.
Introduction - Chapter 1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…The Word became flesh and pitched his tent among us.”
Vs.1-18 The divine word became human (Genesis 1); The Word tabernacled with us (Exodus 33-34); The one true God = Father and Son.
Vs. 19-51 What are the seven titles that are used to describe Jesus in this section? What do they tell us about Jesus?
Chapters 2-10 Miraculous signs and controversies
Chapters 2-4 Jesus interacts with four Jewish institutions: a wedding (ch.2); the temple (ch.2); A Rabbi (ch.3); A sacred well (ch.4). What is the key point of each of these stories?
Chapters 5-10 Jesus interacts with four Jewish feasts/holy days: the Sabbath (ch.5); the Passover (ch.6); the feast of Tabernacles (chs.7-10a); Hanukkah (ch.10b). What is the key point of each of these stories?
Chapters 11-12 The center of the book (physically and spiritually)
The raising of Lazarus - the sixth “sign” of Jesus that John describes. Why does Jesus demonstrate a resurrection within a month of his own resurrection?
The king enters the city to the praise of the people. What is the significance of this event?
Chapters 13-17 Jesus’ final words
Chapter 13 Jesus washes his disciples feet and gives his “great command”.
Why does Jesus wash his disciples’ feet? What is his command to them?
Chapters 14-17 Jesus’ speech and prayer
Jesus is going away so he can send the Spirit.
The ONE GOD consists of the loving relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus’ disciples are those who “abide” in God’s love.
The Spirit will empower Jesus’ followers to carry on his mission through acts of loving service and through bearing witness to the truth.
Jesus predicts opposition - “But don’t be afraid, because I have gained victory over the world.” (16:33)
Chapters 18-20 Jesus’ death and resurrection - the upside-down kingdom
Pilate: “Are you the king of the Jews?” What was Jesus’ answer? What was his point?
“Peace be with you. Just as the Father has sent me, I also send you… Receive the Holy Spirit.”
Chapter 21 The mission continues
The disciples are successful when they listen to Jesus and do what he says.
Peter is restored: “Feed my sheep.”
