Spirit Airlines Baggage Policy
Below is a summary of the fees charged by Spirit Airlines for most domestic flights. The actual Spirit Airlines Baggage Fees you pay may vary depending on the fare class, frequent flyer status and specific route flown. Please consult Spirit's website to calculate the exact fee you will pay.
Spirit Airlines is a low-cost airline that provides passengers with the essentials to get from point A to point B. Passengers should be wary of these airlines as they charge a lot for extras like carry-on bags and snacks.
However, Spirit's baggage policies and status as a low-cost airline are expected to change when the company merges with JetBlue in 2024 to become the fifth-largest airline in the US. The following baggage policies reflect Spirit Airlines' current reputation.
Well, if you're traveling on Spirit Airlines, that means you're a smart traveller. But doesn't that mean you're also a smart packer? If you book Spirit Airlines reservations online but book checked baggage at the airport just prior to flight departure, then one thing is clear; you pay more and get less. It means you are on the losing end. What you may not have known is the fact that you can save more with Spirit Airlines. More specifically, you can save big on checked baggage while traveling with Spirit Airlines. Since we're talking about how you can save more on Spirit Airlines checked baggage, it's important to be aware of Spirit Airlines' checked baggage policy.
Liquor carry-on policy
All Spirit passengers are allowed one small personal item on flights free of charge.
These can be small backpacks, laptop bags or purses. The maximum size is 18 inches x 14 inches x 8 inches. If your personal item exceeds these dimensions, you will have to pay additional fees to bring it with you.
The following items do not count as carry-on baggage and will not be charged extra:
Assist Pet Carrier if you are traveling with a service animal
camera
Crutches, canes, braces or other prostheses
Guest tools and service animals
Food for consumption on board the flight
Toddler bag if you are traveling with the toddler
Car seats when the child is transported in the seat
A duty-free box or bag containing duty-free items
Outerwear (coats/hats/wraps)
Reading material for the flight
A collapsible stroller, compact collapsible stroller or collapsible handcart when the child travels.
umbrella
Carry-on baggage
If you want to take a full-size carry-on bag, you have to pay for it separately. Your carry-on baggage can be up to 22" x 18" x 10" and must fit in the overhead bin.
The fee for carrying a full-size carry-on bag varies by route, carry-on payment deadline and Spirit Saver$ Club promotions (calculate the cost of a carry-on bag here). All baggage fees tend to increase the later you purchase. So you save money if you book your luggage at the same time as your flight.
Spirit Checked Baggage Policy
Checked bags are not included in the ticket price on Spirit Airlines. Instead, you will have to pay a separate fee that varies depending on the route, number of checked bags, and any rewards or loyalty programs. However, all checked bags must not exceed 62 inches (when total length, width and height are added together, including handles and wheels) and there is a 40 pound weight limit. Anything that weighs more or exceeds these dimensions is considered overweight/oversized baggage. Also note that Spirit accepts a maximum of 100 pounds and 80 inches for oversized luggage.
How to save on Spirit baggage fees
Although it is usually not possible to completely avoid Spirit bag fees, there are several ways to save on these fees.
1. Use credit card travel credit
Several travel award cards offer travel credits or even specific "airfare credits" that can be used towards travel and travel-related expenses, including checked baggage. For example, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® card offers a $300 annual travel credit that you can use to pay for your Spirit baggage fees. Similarly, American Express' Platinum Card® offers up to $200 in airfare credit that can also be used to cover your Spirit bag fees when you choose Spirit as your designated airline.
2. Join the Spirit Saver$ Club
By joining Spirit's loyalty program, the Spirit Saver$ Club, you can save money on baggage as it offers its members discounts on fares, baggage, seats and extras. It also grants access to exclusive offers for members only. Membership costs $69.95 annually.
3. Check in baggage instead of carrying it on
Checking your bags in instead of taking them with you usually saves you money, regardless of when you add a bag in the booking process. Depending on your specific flight route, you might not save more than $5 or $10 per bag, but even those amounts can add up when you book a round-trip ticket.
4. Buy your luggage at the time of booking
As the Spirit Baggage Calculator graphs above show, the longer you wait, the more expensive it is to purchase baggage. The cheapest price for your luggage is at the time of booking, so we don't recommend waiting to add it later.
5. Earn Spirit Elite status
Free Spirit is Spirit Airlines' loyalty program that offers you benefits such as free safety shortcuts and boarding, same-day standby and seat selection at check-in. When you achieve Free Spirit Gold status, you'll receive a free first checked carry-on bag, among other valuable benefits. To achieve Gold status, you need 5,000 Status Qualifying Points (SQPs).
Spirit Airlines excess baggage fees
Like all other airlines, Spirit charges if your baggage does not meet the weight, size and quantity regulations. Your bags can weigh up to 40 pounds and measure up to 62 total linear inches. Anything that exceeds these limits is considered excess baggage. When calculating excess baggage charges, Spirit keeps the additional charges constant on all routes, both international and domestic. These charges are in addition to the basic baggage rate.
Excess Baggage Charges:
41-50 pounds: $59 per bag
51-100 pounds: $99 per bag
Oversized Baggage Fees:
63-80 linear inches: $100 per bag
Specials over 80 linear inches: $150 per bag
In general, you can check up to five bags, depending on space available, and the maximum overweight limit is 100 pounds. Depending on your route and travel date, there are some customer services.
Spirit Airlines Military Baggage Policy
Active duty US military personnel are exempt from Spirit's baggage policy and can carry two checked bags and one carry-on bag free of charge. Active-duty US military personnel can verify their active-duty status on the Spirit website at checkout. Keep in mind that this benefit applies only to the US military member and not to family members or dependents.

In the meantime, Spirit advises you to buy inexpensive items like toiletries and clothing and keep those receipts for your claim.
