SpendSense is an offline, on-device expense tracker. This policy explains what the app does and does not do with your information. The short version: SpendSense does not collect, transmit, or share any of your data. Everything stays on your device.
No data collection
SpendSense has no user accounts, no cloud, and no servers. We do not collect, receive, or store any of your personal or financial information on any system we control — because there is no such system.
The app is built without the INTERNET permission. On Android, this means the operating system physically prevents the app from opening any network connection. As a result, your data cannot be sent off your device by the app, by a bug, or by a third-party component.
What data the app stores, and where
All information you enter — expenses, amounts, categories, and notes — is stored only on your device, inside the app's private storage, and is encrypted at rest (SQLCipher / AES-256). The encryption key is held in the Android Keystore (hardware-backed where available) and is released only after you authenticate with your device Biometrics or PIN.
We never receive this data and cannot access it.
Microphone
SpendSense offers optional voice entry. When you use it:
The microphone is accessed only while you explicitly start a recording.
Speech is processed entirely on your device, in memory.
Audio is never written to disk and never transmitted.
There is no background listening, wake word, or always-on recording.
The RECORD_AUDIO permission is requested only for this feature and is used for nothing else.
Backups
You can optionally create backups. A backup is an encrypted file (Argon2id + AES-256-GCM, protected by a passphrase you choose) that you save to a location you select on your own device or storage. Backups are created only when you choose to, are never uploaded anywhere by the app, and can only be opened with your passphrase.
No analytics, ads, or tracking
SpendSense contains no analytics, no crash-reporting SDKs, no advertising, and no tracking. It does not use an advertising identifier and does not share data with any third party (there are no third parties).
Data retention and deletion
Because all data lives only on your device, you are in full control. You can delete your data at any time from within the app, by clearing the app's data in Android Settings, or by uninstalling the app. Uninstalling removes the app's data and its encryption key. Any backup files you created yourself remain wherever you saved them until you delete them.
Children's privacy
SpendSense is a general-purpose finance utility and is not directed at children. It collects no data from anyone, including children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published at this same location with a new effective date.
