Everyone knows that, in order to accomplish great proficiency, musicians and athletes must engage in a great deal of repetitive practice. It would make sense that readers and writers would need to do the same thing to become accomplished with the words of their language.

I have found no studies on the repetition of word writing or spelling, which surprised me. However, there is a substantial body of psychological research on word recognition (primarily because many psychologists have been interested in memory and word memories are relatively easy to study). None of these studies, as far as I can tell, look at comfort level; they are more likely to consider reaction times, correct responses, and generalization to other words.

Finally, research suggests that repetition may be important, but such repetition may better be built into language processing than working with lists and the like (Ideda & Morita, 2003). Reading or writing certain words again and again that are embedded in stories or articles, rather than presented list like, seems to provide greater support for learning (it may be a kind of interval training--you see the word, then you see some other words, then you see the word). Thus, writing high frequency words within the context of sentences or paragraphs may place more appropriate memory demands on learners.

Repetition clearly has a role in reading and spelling--part of building that a system of word knowledge is getting some words into kids heads, but word analysis and repetition within natural language should be the major work horses in that endeavor. I encourage teachers to teach sight vocabulary to beginning readers, but I limit such memory work to about 5 minutes per day, and with both sight word learning and spelling, one tries to make such repetition sensible rather than rote.

It is true that high frequency words do not have typical spelling patterns, but it is rare that all of their elements are odd (e.g., the vowel pronunciation in "the" is a bit funky, but the /th/ is a more consistent element). Analyzing such words, rather than just repeating them again and again, is a better avenue to long-term learning than copying it over and over again

To enhance "visual memory" of a word one can use truespel phonetics. Truespel gives a visual of how a word is pronounced; truly another asset for memory that can be used to see various pronunciation aspects and accents as well with local variations.

So if you learn how to spell each of the 40 US English sounds plus a stress and glottal stop rule, you can spell any US English word you hear, even slang, phonetically. You can write what you hear and then read back what you've written. It will be close to regular spelling because truespel is based on phonics, using regular letters only.

Truespel can be learned in less than an hour, with fluency in a day or so. It's free as my gift. See

When teachers instruct spelling by having students write lists of unrelated words several times, they are teaching it as a memorization task which is not how brain research indicates that we learn to spell. An excellent article connecting spelling instruction to how we learn it most efficiently is the article "How Words Cast Their Spelling" at

 1. Students first need to first learn phonetic spelling, associating sounds with letters - for example, saying the sounds in "slump" and then writing the word.

 2. After that, they learn patterns and rules for spelling - ex. "When y is at the end of short words it usually says "long i sound" or "When it ends in "atch, etch, itch, otch, or utch, it usually ends in "tch." When they are learning to spell words with the short sound of e for ea, students have a list of words like "bread" and "head". For these first two stages of spelling, learning to read words and spell them is complimentary and if both processes are coordinated they enhance each other to break the code.

 3. Finally, students should move into morphographic spelling, learning the meaning and spelling of the most common suffixes, prefixes, base words and root words. Spelling is now not only helping students learn to read more fluently but also adding thousands of words to their vocabulary. When my young teachers use the late linguist, Bob Dixon's spelling curriculum, they tell me that they are finally learning the rules behind spelling words and they are mad that they weren't taught them in school. Our students with IEPS who get this curriculum have an ROI (rate of improvement) on AIMSweb Spelling that is higher than between 65 and 95% of the students in the country who started in each student's grade at his/her spelling level. Poor spelling instruction at the elementary level is impacting universities and what they can have their students do. Profs in the English dept at OSU had to cut down dramatically on writing, because of students' poor spelling........but it's a problem across US campuses. March 9, 2016

As any participant in a spelling bee can tell you, correctly spelling words in the English language is not always easy. In most languages, the way words are spelled (graphemes) consistently relate to the way they sound (phonemes). But the English language uses a mix of spellings and pronunciations from Latin, Greek, French, German, and many others. To further confuse matters, words in English have different spellings in different countries. No wonder English is practically the only language spelling competitions are held in!

The word accessory breaks the pattern we have seen so far (remember what we said about the rules of English spelling being inconsistent?). Unlike accommodate, where the double c makes a single k sound, in accessory, the first c makes a k sound, and the second c makes an s sound. Throw in a double s, and accessory is a real challenge to spell correctly.

Similar to broccoli, zucchini is a word from Italian that uses an i at the end to make an ee sound and has a double c that makes a k sound. If this spelling trips you up too much, you could try the British English word for zucchini instead, which comes from French: courgette [ koor-zhet ].

Another word with Italian origins that is a challenge to spell is spaghetti. The letter i at the end of a word in Italian indicates that it is plural. (Technically, a single spaghetti is a spaghetto.) The nearly-silent h might also throw you off when spelling this word.

Lots of great suggestions in this post! Thank you! When it came time to editing, I used to have students look for things they needed to fix, but now I ask them to look for words they spelled correctly, or places where they used an upper case letter or punctuation correctly. I found that when students were excited to find all the ways they excelled, they noticed places that needed fixing on their own. It was powerful.
