This is a simple test in which you hear the words of your list in random order, and type them inside the text boxes. Do your best to spell them correctly. At the end, you can press the "Check" button to see how well you have done. If you made a mistake, you can click a mistaken word to see its correct form. You can also ask to repeat the test with only the mistaken words.

This online practice will guide you step by step until you know how to write each word correctly just by hearing it. It consists of three phases: in the first phase, the letters to type are highlighted on the keyboard. in the second phase the word will still be presented, and you will copy it. In the third phase, you will type it from solely hearing it.

These are two similar games, one in is more action themed, and the other is calmer. They practice reading the words and matching them to the words you hear. It's an easy reading activity, best for kids in 1st grade and 2nd grade.

This is an action online spelling game. When you type correctly the words you hear, you can eliminate the sharks that are threatening the goldfish. The typing is under time pressure, yet you can press the "clue" button to have the word flashed on the screen. This activity can be challenging, and is more suitable for kids in 3rd grade and 4th grade.

Immediately create a challenging online word search puzzle from your own list of words. After every word you find, you will hear it pronounced. The puzzles are dynamically created, and can sometimes be challenging even for kids in 5th grade and 6th grade.

The lists are arranged in stages that coordinate to the children's development through spelling patterns, also called features.

The beginning lists for first graders allow the kids to approach the words one sound at a time (i.e. initial consonants), to then building more of a sight word vocabulary (i.e. word families).

Moving on from there, learners in second grade are able to chunk parts of words and process them more fluently when they read (i.e. consonant blends).

Third graders continue the fluency of reading while they explore the meanings of words (i.e. silent consonants), while fourth graders can handle more complex spelling patterns (i.e. double consonant with e-drop).

Of course, a student may overlap in stages, for instance, a second grader may still need some work on a few "first grade" features, or may dabble in some third grade features. They are merely an average "snapshot" for students in elementary school.

In addition to the lists for each grade level, there are many "themed" lists for students of all ages to enjoy (themes such as September, Halloween, Winter, Earth Day, Science Day etc.)

Spelling and studying words ultimately promotes a greater interest in reading and writing. When a child has word understanding and vocabulary knowledge, all aspects of Language Arts are enhanced.

Remember, these printablespelling lists are a guideline to help you find the right place to getstarted. All placements of words by grade level is subjective. Any word may be more difficult to some children, naturally, than it is to others. As a teacher or a parent, you're likely to find a few words on any list that are a bit too easy or a bit too challenging for your students or children. Use your own best judgement to edit the list. If you need some easier words, select a few from a lower grade level. Or add a few words from a higher grade to toughen up your list.If you're trying to engage some less-than-enthusiastic spellers, seek additional words from high-interest topics. If your child is a sports enthusiast, supplement the lists above with words such as strategy, champion, stadium, and referee. For animal lovers, add words such as cheetah, rhinoceros, penguin, and flamingo. You are always the best judge! More Printable ListsYou may also be interested in these printable spelling lists.

This month, the Bee's Bookshelf selection is The Winterton Deception 1: Final Word by Janet Sumner Johnson. In this twisty middle grade mystery, thirteen-year-old twins Hope and Gordon enter a spelling bee in a last-ditch effort to save their family from financial ruin, only to find themselves in a cut-throat competition to uncover a fortune and dark secrets about the wealthy relations they've never known.

One of the hardest things for me to figure out my first year teaching was how to help my students master their spelling words. I tried a few different approaches, but over the past two years I have found the perfect spelling blend for my classroom. Each week, I give my students a spelling word list with twelve words for them to memorize. Six words come from the Fry word list and the other six words focus on a specific spelling pattern for the week. These spelling patterns align with the new patterns I introduce or review in class during the week.

Each Monday, my students receive their new spelling word list. I like to spend some time giving a pre-test to see which students are already familiar with the words. The easiest way I have found to do this is by saying a word aloud and having students write the word on their whiteboards. This pre-test is not graded, but it does offer me a quick snapshot of how much time we should spend working on the spelling patterns during the week.

Along with their word lists, my students also receive a sheet of flash cards that they can use to practice their spelling words in the car, at home, or anywhere else they go! I encourage parents to keep these word cards in a bag at home and frequently review as the year goes on.

We complete literacy centers four days per week in our classroom. One of the workshop rotations is always a spelling center. This center is always filled with a few different print and go worksheets that my students can complete independently. My Spelling Centers for Any Word List are perfect because they do not need to be changed each time I pass out a new word list. A few student favorites include writing silly sentences, rainbow writing, and spelling words with yarn or playdoh. You can read more about my spelling centers in my Introducing Weekly Spelling Words Blog Post.

To reinforce spelling word learning at home, I give out a daily spelling homework page that is great for any word list. I love these worksheets because I can prep multiple copies in advance and pass out on a daily basis as needed. On Thursday afternoons, I always send home a spelling practice test for spelling homework. The test must be given by a parent or older sibling. I have found this really helps parents to identify any words that students need extra help with before they take their Friday spelling test. You can find these worksheets in my Spelling Homework for Any Word List activity packet.

Every Friday morning, I pass out testing folders and give the spelling test. I know taking tests can cause a lot of anxiety as students get older, so I like to give them this practice starting in first grade. There are never any consequences if students do not do well, but there are always incentives available to students who receive 100% on their spelling tests. One of my favorite incentives is to have students complete a sticker chart in their Student Data Tracking Incentive Booklets for a special prize! I have found this really motivates my students to practice and try their best!

To help you see what spelling words are covered at each stage, we have created year-group word list documents to show you the spelling skill alongside the words covered within that skill. So when you assign that word list to your class you will know which words they will be practising.
