Participation and transparency in the field: a conversation on best ethical practice

by Chiara Barbieri

Ethical standards applied to data collection in the field are constantly evolving. Following the urge for a broader representation of human diversity in the scientific conversation, the inclusion of underrepresented groups is not often accompanied by adequate participation in knowledge production. Can there be a single standard to fit all field conditions? Which principles should be prioritized when aiming for best ethical practice in the field? Which aspects pose more challenges?

Here I will present situations from different fieldwork dynamics, with examples from multidisciplinary projects that involved the collection of linguistic and genetic data. I will reflect on risks-benefits, organizational challenges, and possible solutions to incorporate stakeholders’ perspectives, both in the design and in the dissemination of a research project.
