Range: North America; from Canada into northern Mexico
Subspecies
M. m. mephitis: Eastern Canada (Nova Scotia, Quebec, and northern Ontario)
M. m. avia: Prairies of Illinois, as well as western Indiana and eastern Iowa
M. m. elongata: West Virginia to Florida, west to the Gulf coast and into the Mississippi River
M. m. estor: Arizona, western New Mexico, and northwestern Mexico
M. m. holzneri: Southern California into parts of Baja California, as well as the Sierra Nevada and the San Bernardino range
M. m. hudsonica: Manitoba to British Columbia, and south from Minnesota to Colorado
M. m. major: Eastern Oregon, northern California, and Nevada, as well as east to the Wasatch Range in Idaho and Utah
M. m. mesomelas: West side of the Mississippi Valley, westward along the coast of Texas to the Matagorda Island, and up the Red River Valley as far at least as Wichita Falls
M. m. nigra: New England, south to Virginia and west to Indiana
M. m. notata: Southern Washington and northern Oregon, east of the Cascade Range
M. m. occidentalis: Northern and central California, to the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
M. m. spissigrada: Around the Puget Sound as well as coastal region of Washington and northern Oregon
M. m. varians: Southern and western Texas, eastern New Mexico, and adjacent parts of northeastern Mexico, as well as north into Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and Nebraska
