Range: North America; from Alaska to Newfoundland and south to northern Mexico, also found in parts of Greenland

Subspecies 

• B. c. canadensis: Labrador and Newfoundland, winter across the East Coast of the US.

• B. c. fulva: Southern Alaska to British Columbia.

• B. c. interior: Northeastern Canada, winters in the US South.

• B. c. maxima: Reintroduced to the US Midwest.

• B. c. moffitti: Western Canada to the West Coast of the US, as well as through the Rocky Mountains and into Southwestern US.

• B. c. occidentalis: Copper River Delta and Prince William Sound in Alaska, winters in the Willamette Valley.

• B. c. parvipes: Central Alaska to the Canadian Prairies.
