An ostomy is a type of surgery that reroutes the colon or urinary tract to outside the body through a small hole called a stoma. Life with an ostomy is not much different from life without an ostomy. There are some key differences and even some advantages in my opinion. From what I have learned life without an ostomy is easier and more free but not much different from life with an ostomy bag. There is an adjustment period following the ostomy surgery depending on the person will determine the length of the adjustment.
With an ostomy bag there you are able to eat almost whatever you want. There are some foods that will cause problems though so doctors recommend you try and stay away from them. Some foods may cause you to have bad or worse gas than you had once before. Without an ostomy bag, you can eat whatever you want with little to no repercussions. A downside to an ostomy bag is that some foods may cause you to have an upset stomach, diarrhea, incomplete digestion, and urine odor. Some of these problem-causing foods may even be something you had loved to eat before.
Having an ostomy bag can affect what sports you are allowed to play. For example, contact sports are a no-go. There is a high risk of rupturing the bag. There is also the possibility any waste can go back into the stoma thus causing untold problems. You can speak to your doctor about other options to allow you to play more rough sports although it will be dangerous as previously mentioned. There is a lot of sport that can still be played even with an ostomy bag. Although not having an ostomy is the better option and allows for all sports to be played.
You won’t have to worry about getting new clothes as you will be able to hide them under what you have already. I personally wear sweatpants and sweatshirts all the time so I think I could keep it concealed rather easily. It is also your choice of who you tell about your ostomy as it won’t be easily noticeable. I personally do not think I would openly share something like that. It is good to be open and upfront with everyone however so it may be something I would share with people I am close with.
Life with an ostomy bag is not much different from life without an ostomy bag. There are some inconveniences possibly like not being able to eat your favorite food again as it may cause digestive problems but I feel that is a small price to pay in regards to staying alive. Only a few sports would be off-limits like football or hockey but there are still plenty of other activities that can be played with an ostomy bag. The people you choose to share it with would be entirely up to you, it is about who you feel comfortable sharing the situation with. In my opinion life without an ostomy bag is easier to live. I say this because of the small restrictions that are placed on your life. I’m a big food lover and I love to play more rough sports like paintball or soccer. Having an ostomy for me would not be enjoyable.
