There are many questions that you might have about your ostomy. How can I care for my stoma? How can I live the life of my choice? What social impact will my ostomy leave on my life?
With all of the information waiting to show up on the screen in front of you, and doctors ready to address any concern that you might have, finding answers to the above questions doesn’t have to be a challenge.
That said, we are now going to talk about the top ostomy-related concerns.
To address this concern, you need to look at the pouching system you use, and the frequency of the bag change. Other factors that you must look into may include the condition of your skin, adhesive issues, and the point where leakage occurs the most. Taking precautions to protect the skin and using the best adhesive are appropriate solutions to related problems. But finding a solution might become tricky if the skin portion that has to come under the barrier is uneven due to any reason. You can talk to your ostomy care nurse, and ask if you can use a barrier ring
Irritation in the peristomal skin can be a real concern for people with an ostomy. This irritation happens more likely to the patients who have skin breakdown, open wounds, or a rash under the skin barrier. Factors that you must consider may include the skin breakdown and incompatibility of the product that you have been using to prepare your skin. You can address this issue by using stoma powder that absorbs moisture from the broken skin, allowing the barrier to form a proper seal.
The odor issue comes up either when you empty your pouch or when there is a leakage. You will need to determine why you are experiencing this issue. If it is due to the leakage, you will need to do something quickly to make sure that your stay in your social circle is not bothering the people around you. First of all, you need to do something to prevent leakage. Take care of your peristomal skin, and use a wafer with strong adhesive to ensure a tighter seal.
Sometimes, you may want to use an ostomy bag with a filter to avoid pouch ballooning. While the filter reduces the odor to a certain degree, it cannot eliminate it. Using deodorant can help you prevent odor completely.
Many of the ostomates have a fear of other people getting to know about their ostomies. The good news is that you can hide your ostomy from others. Using a discreet pouching system allows you to wear clothes with tighter fitting without letting anyone know that you are wearing an ostomy bag. Furthermore, you can use a pouching system with filters to avoid pouch ballooning even if you are suffering from gas problems.
Nobody likes smelling bad. I mean, just look at how society values hygiene and all that. We have so many products made just so that you don’t have to worry about smelling bad. First off we have deodorant, which is basically a must-have if you wish to be socially accepted and talked bad about behind your back. For me personally, I prefer wearing an antiperspirant rather than a regular deodorant because I don’t like the feeling of my armpits sweating. So there is a little bit of information that you didn’t need to know for the day. Anyways, we do things like chew gum and brush your teeth so our breath doesn’t smell bad, and we use super nicely scented soaps and detergents to wash ourselves and our clothes so that we smell good as well. With all of that being said, wouldn’t it make sense for people with ostomies to want to smell good as well? Well, the problem with that is that it can be a little bit harder to keep from smelling bad if you have a stoma. Anyone who has been living with a stoma for a decent amount of time will tell you that sometimes smelling bad is just out of their control.
The thing about a stoma that not a lot of people realize is that you literally cannot control when your waste is coming out of your body. It would be like instead of controlling when you go to the bathroom, it just comes out of your bottom whenever it feels like it. As you can imagine, this is not a super convenient or easy way to live. However, there are a lot of people who make living with a stoma appear relatively easy and it is totally possible to enjoy your life even with a stoma. However, it is true that ostomy pouch odor remains a serious and dangerous problem for people that wear an ostomy pouch. I use the term dangerous because, in a lot of social situations, having your ostomy pouch stink up an entire room at a party is probably the most embarrassing and humiliating thing that could ever happen to you. It is quite possible that you may lose some friends over the whole ordeal. That’s why I wanted to write this article to talk about some products that are specifically made for people with ostomy pouches who want to reduce the amount of odor that they are producing on a day to day basis.
So if you have not heard about all the different types of ostomy pouch deodorizers, then boy are you behind on the times. Deodorizers are specifically made for ostomy pouches that can be used in tablets, drops, or liquids that can be put into ostomy pouches to prevent odor that can ruin friendships. I have heard about some people trying to use random cleaning or odor products in their ostomy pouches to try to mask the smell of their output, but I just have to say that this is a horrible idea. Straight up, using something like cologne or perfume inside your ostomy pouch is not only damaging to your whole ostomy system, but it can also be really harmful to your stoma and the skin around it. Hope this is useful!
