Success Tips

Guidelines to be a Successful Online Learner

  1. Be proactive! This fully online course is not a “softer or easier” course. To successfully complete this course, access the course multiple times per week: every Tuesday to preview the new weekly modules and two or more times to engage in participatory activities and to complete assignments. Carefully read the Module Overview page which includes the week’s learning objectives and a list of assignments. Previewing the modules will allow you to assess the weekly workload and put the due dates in your calendar. Having a mental picture of what’s ahead is the best thing you can do to prepare each week.

  2. Plan for the unexpected! Aim to have all your assignments done 24 hours before the due date. Why? Because life happens and when you wait until the last minute, you’re more likely to have problems meeting a due date. Success is contingent upon the ability to master course content while simultaneously mastering all of life’s challenges.

  3. Don't let technology stop you! Technology should not get in your way from being successful in this class, but if it does, visit the “Tech Support” link on the Canvas course homepage to get help.

  4. Be a good communicator! If you need to be away from the course because of an unforeseen event or if you identify a challenge meeting a due date, please contact me right away to let me know what is going on. I am human and I do understand! Contacting me in advance of a due date will keep you and I in sync and ensure you don’t get overwhelmed by unfinished work. In your message, propose an alternative due date (within 24 hours is advised to ensure you don’t fall behind). Please don’t consider that proposal approved, however, until you have received a response from me. Please keep in mind that I teach 100+ students in four different classes every semester, so be sure to include your full name and your class number (CRN#) to facilitate our communications.

  5. Don’t be shy, ask questions! Please visit my student drop-in hours to get “live” one-on-one help from me. Even when you will be working in a remote location, remember that you are not alone! We have several communication tools such as Zoom and the course discussion board (“The Course Café) for student-to-student and student-to-instructor interactions.

  6. Most importantly, be engaged and curious! I will provide a supportive and safe learning environment where we can share and discuss ideas while having fun, but keep in mind that the amount of effort you put into learning will determine what you get out of it. You can expect me to provide a clear, organized course that is designed to ensure that you successfully meet the learning outcomes.
