Website Demo: 2024 Feb
This demo was for an earlier draft of the new website. But it still somewhat applies.
This demo was for an earlier draft of the new website. But it still somewhat applies.
Most users will start by clicking a jump-down link in the Table-of-Contents (TOC) of the Home webpage.
Most of our webpages begin with a TOC. If a webpage has a TOC the TOC is always at the top (under the webpage title).
The Google Sites system automatically updates all TOCs whenever needed.
Also, note the menu in the upper-right corner:
The 'v' symbol indicates a drop-down menu.
When the user or device squeezes the webpage to a much narrower width, the menu shifts to the upper-left corner, and looks like the three horizontal lined so-called 'hamburger' style menu.
The first jump-down link in the Home TOC is to our Announcements. The old website did not have any good place for new Announcements, and hopefully this will be better (I have since added a "Updated on [date]" to this TOC link).
The Weekly Results section (here labeled 'H.3'), on the Home webpage, contains links to weekly results for 2024, and for 2023.
Going into 2024 and beyond, the website will retain and accumulate the results separately for each week, for all years.
On most webpages with a series of sections, the background color alternates, to make it easy for the eye to distinguish section boundaries.
The circled "not yet ready" link to 2024's week #01 results will soon be upgraded with actual results, in April.
As each week occurs, this list of links will grow by one more link, in section 'R.1' of this webpage.
Section 'R.2' has links to result reports which do Not involve the accumulation of more report files each week. Rather these reports accumulate data within themselves.
The overall League Schedule will also contain all the information for our Weekly Fun Competitions (WFunC).
This screenshot image shows live clickable links for the final few weeks of 2023 weekly result reports (which by chance were not yet deleted under the old system).
The 2024 result reports will have a similar list of historical links.
Imagine you click the link for 2023/08/24 week #20...
You arrive here when you click the link for 2023/08/24 week #20 in the preceding screen.
A click on any of these result report links displays the same report types and formats that are familiar from 2023 under the old system.
For 2024 the result reports will continue the same types and formats that were used in 2023 and for many years earlier. 2025 might see some major improvements.
Starting in February 2024, SCGL has switched away from its old webhost Square/Weebly. The old website on Square/Weebly still exists, but it will remain as it was at the end of our 2023 season, with no further updates. We now have our website hosted on Google Sites.
Old https address was --> https://SpaceClubGolf.weebly.com/ .
New --> https://sites.google.com/view/SpaceClubGolf/ .
Advantages of this change to Google Sites as our webhost include the following:
Our Google Gmail ID of SpaceClubGolf@gmail.com inherently has privileges on some Google tools. We lose the benefit of coordinating these tools to our advantage by using a non-Google webhost site, such as Square/Weebly. By switching in 2024 to the Google Sites webhost, we can begin to leverage these coordination options.
Tools coordination brings better file management. Our files, including report files, are now stored in the cloud under the authority of our SCGL email address, SpaceClubGolf@gmail.com.
o No longer do files have to be transferred somehow to the next Secretary.
o The result files can now be accessed directly from the Google Sites web development user interface.
Now sometimes a file can be updated, and the update can appear on the website immediately, without the former labor to re-upload the file to the webhost.
Google Sites offers a handy automated Table-of-Contents (TOC) control, which Square/Weebly does Not offer. Google Sites also offers superior sectioning within each webpage.
Square bought Weebly, and this extra layer of logging in through Square is a minor hassle that portends more to come.
LOGIC: The logic of the new website is much the same. Basically, what were menu items in 2023 are now section headers on the home webpage in 2024. And what were button to our weekly reports are now links as textual phrases.
HISTORY: As part of our switch away from bulky buttons to textual links, the new website will now retain history, by accumulating the links for each weekly set of result reports.
TOC: Most webpages now begin with an automatically generated Table-of-Contents (TOC). The TOC contains links that jump down the webpage to each corresponding section.
Sadly, the free versions of both webhosts, Google Sites and Square/Weebly, do Not allow us to upload our HTML files (our weekly result reports). Under the free version, we must still individually convert each HTML file into a PDF, and then upload each PDF (tedious).
