South Frontenac StockSport Club

Guiding Principle: South Frontenac Stocksport Club provides positive opportunities for physical and social health. We believe in an inclusive and safe place to play, compete, and grow our sport in our community. Scroll down to see our Ice stock news.

Our tagline is "Reignited and Reunited". Our goal is to build the sport of Stock Sport and Ice Stock back to a level of participation that was reminiscent of years ago and beyond. Additionally, the playing of this sport will allow the many people, who have had connections to this sport (pioneers right up to the newcomers) to continue to come together for experience and social fun. We also want to build the sport with the inclusion of all players: men, women, and youngsters too! Stock Sport and Ice Stock can be played by all different shapes and sizes, by young and old, people with differences, and by both sexes! Our goal is to grow the sport, to play and compete as a diverse group with a common interest in doing something that combines athleticism, mental focus, and social togetherness.

Update from our club President for the Winter season and marking 10 years as the Kingston Eisstock, Kingston Area Ice Stock Club, and South Frontenac Stocksport Club. Jan. 15th/23

Hello SFSC and Happy New Year!

REFLECTION: A DECADE IN!

2023 marks 10 years since we officially reignited the Kingston Eisstock Club.  Initially as the Kingston Area Ice Stock Club (KAISC) and then as our club evolved, we changed to South Frontenac Stocksport Club (SFSC).  It's quite something to reflect on these past 10 years.  We have accomplished so much and many of our members have experienced opportunities that are at another level in terms of international competition and to someone like Kristel H who just fell in love with the sport to get active and enjoy the social bonds.  At the end of the day, SFSC has become the capital of Stock Sport in Canada.  The journey has not been easy and many of you have given much of your efforts and time to push us forward.

Now we move into 2023 with lots of excitement to look forward to!  SFSC is hosting the 2023 America Cup and so far  Brazil, Paraguay, and Guatemala have committed to competing in this IFI-sanctioned event which will take place in the third week of July.  We have invested in youth equipment and now have more youth playing our sport than ever.  In the spring a roof will be constructed - complete with LED lighting - over the multiuse pad.  Rain will no longer postpone or cancel our sport.  We have a storage building at the lanes for our equipment to be stored.  We have a place to continue pushing this sport forward.  As president, I am so thankful for the team of people within the SFSC who have all played important roles in the past ten years to get to this point.

EQUIPMENT:

And finally, we are STOCKED with equipment.  Winter and Summer plates  (10 new fast green plates) and lots of stock bodies and handles. If you are interested in any used equipment, please let me know.

We also have a set of 8 wood stocks that we are going to trial as a fundraiser for the club.  We will be offering day/weekend rental of this equipment for people in our area.  If you know of anyone who would like to rent the stocks for their lake, pond, or backyard rink "wild stock" then let them know.  We had well over 100 inquiries in the past two years about getting equipment but the cost of a "set" was far too much.  We are hoping that this option can provide people with some cottage fun at a better price point.  $50 for a day.  $100 for the weekend. See attached picture.

Prost!

2nd Annual Travis Babcock Target Shooting competition with high scores all around and new records set!

What a month August was at the lanes!  The 2nd Annual Travis Babcock Target Shooting competition was a month-long battle and so many of our members came out and gave it a shot.  As president, to see the growth and improvement from some of our newer members, from our youth players, was really amazing.  For our experienced / competitive players, seeing how we would push and encourage each other was also such a positive.

And so after the last day in August, we were left with the following overall winners who will be on the trophy for the 2022 entry:

Top Female: Tammy Lambert with a score of 121 points.  This is Tammy's second year as our top female target shooter. Congrats Tammy!

Top Male: Kevin Bryan with a score of 152 points.  What an overall increase Kevin has made compared to last year in his scores.

Top U20 Female: Sophia Antione with a score of 72 points.  Sophia is more and more refining her skills as a stock athlete and this has paid off as she placed third place overall in the first tryout for the America Cup women's team.  Well done Sophia!

Top U20 Male:  A few of our original youngsters, who began playing this sport when they were in Grade 6 with their buddy Travis, came out of semi-retirement to compete for this trophy in memory of their friend.  Seth Bryan came out on top with a score of 84.  Congrats Seth (father and son winners here!).

Top U16 Female:  One of our new youth athletes who quickly caught on to this sport this summer is Meredith Peters.  She already has a keen eye for "take out" shots and was able to get a score of 32 points.  I have no doubt that next year she will more than double this score as she continues to refine her skills.

Top U16 Male: Another new addition to our youth component has been Trentin Richardson.  His growth in this sport has been very promising.  He totaled a best of 84 points.  No doubt he will break the point threshold as he continues to learn and grow in this sport.

We also decided to acknowledge for this competition some other successes.  These folks will be given some fun prizes for their recognition for the highest scores in the four elements (moss, takeout, back moss, tick and bump) as well as recognition for the most attempts completed.

U16 Female: Meredith Peters won all of the categories for this.

U16 Male: Trentin won all categories for this event, except for "take out".  Jack Craig had the highest take-out score of 14 pts.

U20 Female: Sophia Antione won all categories in this event.

U20 Male:  Seth and Jack tied for most attempts with 3.  Jack Hammer with highest middle moss with 34 pts.  Take out was Seth with 42 points, back moss with 24 points, and tick and bump with 16.

Adult Female:

Most Attempts: Tammy Lambert with  8 attempts

Center Moss: Bianca Sinclair with 50 points

Take-out: Tammy Lambert with 47 points

Back Moss: Becca Smith with 42 points

Tick and Bump: Bianca Sinclair with 24 points

TOP THREE OVERALL:

Tammy Lambert: 121 points

Becca Smith: 118 points

Bianca Sinclair: 117 points

Adult Male:

Most Attempts: Karl Jr with 21

Center Moss: Kevin Bryan with 52 points

Take Out: Kevin Bryan with 60 points (6 for 6!)

Back Moss: Kevin Bryan with 54 points

Tick and Bump: Paul Blais with 38

TOP THREE OVERALL:

Kevin Bryan: 152 points

Paul Blais: 140 points

Jamie Babcock: 135 points

Congrats to all!  This was really a great approach to this and we look forward to next year's competition. Thanks to our Club President for taking care of the scores and for writing this update!

SFSC get's a Community grant from South Frontenac township to invest in "youth" and "Junior" team!

Written by Karl Hammer

July 12, 2022.

With the financial support of South Frontenac Township's "Community Grants", South Frontenac Stocksport Club has been able to invest in equipment and material ideal for youth 10 - 14 years old.  This equipment is lighter and more easily maneuvered for younger players of the sport.

Although we now have a strong adult base playing this sport, our current objective is to focus on youth with the ultimate goal that Canada will send its first ever "JUNIOR" team to Europe to compete in the 2025 World Junior Championships.  We also hope to have a junior team competing in next summer's international competition called the "America Cup" (which will be hosted right here in Centennial Park in July, 2023).

The International Ice Stock Federation is keen on seeing Canada develop its youth and Barrie and South Frontenac are the only areas that currently have youth playing.  The reality is that there are amazing, realistic and achievable opportunities for interested youth in these areas to do something extremely special and unique.

Stock Sport does not require the athlete to sprint and run.  It is a sport that demands coordination, concentration, power and finesse. In the team game, it combines the strengths of four people to beat the other team in a battle of strategy.  Stock Sport is a relative of curling, however it offers far more "sport" within the "sport".  Distance Shooting, Target Shooting and Team Target Shooting are all competed disciplines outside the team game (see the links below to gain further understanding).  Each of these offer opportunities for our youth right here to compete in future international competitions.

Depending on the athletic abilities, it takes approximately a year of consistent practice / playing to get a good handle on the technique and skill needed to compete in this sport.  And then it's refinement and continued advancement of skill and technique to become a well rounded stock player.

The other beautiful thing of this sport is that there is much parity in gender.  It is common to see competition at the JUNIOR level in a mixed gender format.

And so, if you have a child in the 10 - 15 year age range and they are looking to try something new and different, with the idea that we are building Canada's first JUNIOR team, please PM / contact our club. The intensity of practice is once a week in a formal sense. There is NO COST as youth under 16 years of age play for free!   We will be learning / training at the Centennial Park Multi Use Pad.

If there are interested youth older than 15, that is fine too, but adult equipment is used at this age-range.

Thanks,

South Frontenac Stocksport Club

April 29-30th CISF Winter Tourney REsults!

The 2022  6th annual Canadian Winter Championship was held at the Gananque Curling Club on April 29-30th 2022 hosted by the South Frontenac Stocksport Club with the Canadian Ice Stock Federation.

34 players were divided into three batches of skill sets and then randomly selected into three competitive pools. Every player played a 2v2 game (two stocks each) partnered with each of the players in their pool. The top two from each pool plus two third-place finishers advanced to a 4v4 championship game.

Those who didn’t win as much had a better chance to win a great consolation prize. Each loss was worth a card for the best poker hand.

The result was a great balance for lesser and more experienced players alike. Everyone tasted the thrill of victory multiple times and it gave a chance for the top performers to earn a spot in the finals.

It turned out to be a late Friday night and long Saturday but the smiles were as bright at the end as they were at the beginning.

Seen below from left to right, are, Becca Smith, Chris Hammer, Steff Mayrl, and Steven Morriessy who won 1st place in the Canadian Ice Stock Federation Winter Tourney! Second place team, Jamie Babcock, Paul Blais, Kevin Bryan, and Karl Hammer. The Honorary Ref for that game was Tammy Lambert.

Join our club! We are always looking for new members
