The Climate Change Flagship Programmes

Time: 13:00- 14:00

Venue: South African Pavilion, Exhibition Block H, no. 9

Host: The Department of Environmental Affairs

Description: South Africa already has a well-developed base for meeting its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), through the Climate Change Near-Term Priority Flagship Programmes, detailed in South Africa’s National Climate Change Response Policy. The Climate Change Flagship Programmes, seek to realise the accelerated implementation of high impact, large-scale catalytic climate action by championing implementation of climate action beyond pilot initiatives.

The Climate Change Flagship Programmes demonstrate how South Africa’s climate change response continues to mature and deepen over time to a progressively bold and ambitious national climate change response, enabled by collaborative and collective action, and the creation of opportunities and leveraging resources. South Africa’s implementation capability has grown tremendously, characterised by more effective systems and processes, better able to achieve strong, well-coordinated progress in responding to climate change.

This event aims to, among other things, provide an overview of South Africa’s Flagship climate change response measures, experiences, insights, and lessons learnt that could have potential applications for other countries.

Speakers:

  • Dr Tsakani Ngomane, Deputy Director-General Climate Change, Sustainable Development and Air Quality, Department of Environmental Affairs, South African Government (TBC)
  • Reitumetse Molotsane, Director, Climate Change Monitoring and Evaluation, Department of Environmental Affairs, South African Government
  • Panel Discussion Representatives from other Government Departments and business (Departments of Energy, Transport and Agriculture and the NBI) TBC)
